I had gearbox fault and service light come up the other day after I stupidly tried to turn the car on and stick it straight into reverse without giving the poor old thing a chance to think.
I turned it off and the warning disappeared and had not came back since.
I checked the fault codes and have
P0409
P1459
P0401
P0490
Now having a look this all seems to be to do with the egr, probably filthy and causing an issue or need to be changed.
I can’t imagine this to being your a gearbox fault though?
And if the gearbox is faulty why only the once and gone away?

By service light do you mean the engine management light or just the Service light ?
Those fault codes may have been there for some time and nothing to do with what just happened. They might come back when the car is used.

Re: Gearbox fault
I have a 2010 C4 Picasso with the EGS and I had to remove the EGR for cleaning but the soot had gotten past both seals and ate out the conductive paths for the position sensor. I replaced with a cheap one off amazon - the housing wouldn't mate with the motor so I ended up swapping the plastic electronic bits out on the old housing and it eventually went back in.
Having said that, I am yet to get my car running again after servicing the clutch so I can't report if the amazon knock off actually works yet.
The EGR is an absolute pain to service, you will need to remove the windshield wipers and scuttling and I needed Clic-R clamp pliers and a mirror to get the valve out and back in. The EGR system in mine was introducing loads of sludge into the air intake, not impressed with how difficult it is to service.

I’ve driven the car a few times since to check and nothing has come back on

I am still not clear - the engine management light is the one that is an engine shape and usually orange - is this the one that came on ? A service light is just a light that is the word Service.Jw93 wrote: 03 May 2025, 12:34The engine management service light and the words gearbox faultyPaulC5 wrote: 03 May 2025, 11:35 By service light do you mean the engine management light or just the Service light ?

What year is the car and how many miles, presumably diesel but I've had Saab petrols with an egr valve ?
