£740 for two new rear disks and pads?

Unread post by boristhespie »

So i got quoted from garage £740 for two new read disks and pads? With a couple of other small things on top (headlight brackets need repaired as they've snapped) and bulbs renewed.

Was also told they can't guarantee the calipers due to possible breaking. Which I know about but these have been replaced before so wouldnt expect it.

But does £740 for a normal wear and tear item seem excessive.

What car is this for ? Seems 2 or 3 times what you might expect to pay, is there anything special about the discs ? Have a look at such as GSF for other supplier parts costs.

They are not difficult to do provided nobody has put the loctite type stuff down the caliper bolt holes when the calipers were last removed. Replacement is covered in the Haynes manual but there is also a write up on the Citroen Owners Club which is worth a read if you want to do the job yourself http://citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroe ... 5-to-2008/

Beware of cheap ebay pads though, they might be made from cardboard.

F*@k me sideways, are these made of solid gold and fitted by Amazonian beauties, while you have a massage from another one or something? They're about 60 quid a pair and max an hour per side, even for a neanderthal like me 🤣🤣

The garage has been dong this car since I got it. It has had a couple of replacement calipers due to galvanic corrosion and sticking brake pistons. The guy said the price doesn't take into account the price of replacing a caliper if it is knackered.

But, I think he has decided he doesn't want the work hence the huge quote. Rather he just told me if that's the case.

How easy for run of amill garage to do these. The guys who did my MOT hadn't a clue. And I've had a few things said about not touching hydro suspended citroens because they are more complex. Can't understand what's different re brakes.

A tip for this problem, remove the caliper, leave the brake pipe attached, clean the two mateing surfaces with wire brush and emery cloth, the reassemble with a smear of blue hermatite (blue doesn't set) between caliper and itsmounting, this creates a very thin barrier between the caliper and it's mounting and stops the two metals interaction.

As everyone suggests, that's far too much. I fairly recently had to replace my rear calipers on my 07 C5 (not x7) as the hole for the bolts for the pad retention system goes through had crumbled into nothing. But I picked up a pair of NEW calipers off eBay for around £50-60. I realise they likely won't be to OE quality, but it's not like the OE calipers were of particuarly high quality seeing as they crumbled away.

Part number for the caliper is 4400 L3, if required. Pads and discs aren't expensive either, so assuming you can get the bolts out I'd be tempted to DIY if you can.

Where the pad retaining bolt goes through the caliper you need to put some copper grease on to avoid the corrosion and never do it up too tight so it does not break the hole area - it should only be 3.5 Nm.
