Boot rubber

Been trying to sort the boot lock out on the missus' C4 Coupé. Identified at least one broken wire. Now trying to remove the rubber sleeving from the boot lid and it is tethered with another piece of rubber. Is there a way of un tethering it (if so how and how do you re tether it afterwards?) or do you just cut it?

Can't remember seeing the tether on the 407 when I had a similar issue.
