2.0hdi non start

Unread post by Mick c »

Hi all , new to this forum and hoping I can get the help I need with my 2008 mk2 dispatch.
Due to oil dilution I changed the 4 injectors for replacement ones from Wt diesels . Removed the inlet manifold and cleaned it and replaced it .
Since then I can't get the van to start and codes that come up are as follows: p1693 , u1118 , u2001 and marked as permanent?. Have cleared codes and they return. Showing no fuel pressure ,good rpm and 100% on the injectors at 77volts . Completely stumped as I have been trying daily to find the problem. I have read the posts on these forums with exactly the same problem and codes but without a solution. Any help on how to try and find a solution would be great 👍

Re: 2.0hdi non start communication faults

Unread post by Mick c »

So mobile mechanic has had a good look and got the same codes up. It seams to be a communications fault . Pump works albeit a weak
Spurt when turning over. Pressure regulator showing 50% when turning over ?. Is this affecting the Pressure build up . Also can anyone tell to look for the communications fault. Wiring or remove ecu and clean connections? . Tia 😊

U1118 is loss of communication with the BSI and U2001 is a missing 'wake up' command.

If you look on live data do you have communication with the BSI/can you see live data correctly?

Do you see crank signal etc in the engine management ECU?

Does it start with easy start?

I had one with the same problem it turned out to be air trapped in the fuel rail, carefully bleeding it step by step with the injector pipes disconnected sorted it.

Thanks for replying mate 👍
Hi , I have communication with the bsi and cam showing synchronising OK. Fires OK on easy start but doesn't run .

Tried bleeding but could you please let me know how you managed to clear . Be great if I could clear the air by your method .

Pot got long today as shouldn't be here already...

Can you hear the low pressure pump start in the rear when you turn the key?

Fuel pressure regulator of 50% is probably not unreasonable though I would have to check. It's normally 17-19% when running.

You need circa 300 bar fuel rail pressure and a minimum 260 rpm cranking speed.

Also open the bonnet and see if you can locate a reddish-brown double relay next to the ECU. Let me know if your ECU has 1 plug or 3 plugs as I can only really help with the 1 plug diagnosis.

When the key is turned you should feel the double relay click if you have one on that vehicle. If you have 1 plug ECU ie Bosch EDC15C2 then you should have power at pins 1, 69, 86 and 87 (from memory) when the ignition is on.

P1693 is coming up as an immobiliser code so maybe your key is now faulty or there is a wiring issue. I have all the detailed flow charts for Xantia Coded Anti-Start but not your vehicle. It may be similar but that would need determining. Wiring loom interconnections under wheel arches can get corrosion and cause all manner of issues.

I suggest you get a highly rated auto-electrician around worst case scenario.

Hi thanks for your reply 😊
My ecu is 3 plug type although I've yet to take it out of its position. Tempted to do this as the connection look as if they have never been checked or cleaned . Took off 2 10mm nuts but looks like I have to drill out rivets to remove the metal frame ?.
p1693 relates to a mobiliser fault is interesting. I have the bleeps when inserting and turning off key .
Does this mean it's working OK?. The lights and mileage come on when I open the door aswell .
Really hoping this is fuel.rail airlock not letting the pressure to rise enough to enable switching to communicate with ecu ?.

Does yours have an in-tank pump? If so, can you hear it prime when the key is turned up (ie not trying to start it).

If yours has the pump and it is not operating then that is the first port of call.

Not sure your fuse box is the same but if so check Fuses 2, 4, 15 and 25 on the passenger compartment fuse box. I am sure there are some similarities but I don’t know how far they go between my 1 plug HDi and your 3 plug.

Better to wait for someone who has your vehicle to comment.

You said in your initial post that there was no fuel pressure. This could be cause by any number of reasons. I am sure that fuel pressure would build irrespective of immobiliser issue. It just won’t allow it to start.

You may by coincidence have more than one fault and perhaps no fault code for it. Having a diagnostics tool that reads codes does not tell you what is wrong. It only guides you.

Hi , my van doesn't have the in tank pump.
Good call on the pump pressure immobiliser idea.
It's knocks that off my list .Thanks again

This is on the basis that yours is a DW10 HDi or derivative. Pump builds pressure off the cambelt on my DW10ATED but mine has the in-tank pump which returns fuel to the fuel tank and primes the system.

Does yours have a hand priming bulb then? If so, have you tried hand priming whilst someone tries to start the engine? Hand priming bulbs can leak. Of course, I am just taking stabs in the dark here as I have limited information on your vehicle ins and outs.

Hi yes the dw10ated 2.0hdi 16v . I did try that but may try again at the weekend. The mechanic who checked it over said if the problem was air then it would probably show up.on the scanner?. It does show 8bar when I have pressured the system on the crank data but no codes regards this . I'm hoping gibbo can give me info on clearing air from fuel rail and rule this out ?. I imagine that flowing pressure is measured by the ecu etc . As you said earlier I may have to find a top auto electrician to rule out or cure for me . Gutted as it ran and started well before injectors swapped out with reconditioned ones . All tested OK 👍

One thing you could try is firing it up with a blast of easy start into the inlet pipe a few times, that might be enough to raise the pressure and clear the air in the system.

Fuel pressure is measured by the fuel pressure sensor and this reported back to the ECU. A faulty fuel pressure sensor would cause a non-start too as would many other things.

It cannot be guessed at. It all needs ruling out.

Hi. We did try that . The engine cranks at 245rpm on battery but something is stopping the pump from building pressure?.
