307 1.6 TU5JP4 oil filter STUCK IN METAL BOTTOM HOUSING

Unread post by HelioMV »

So after a new clutch and timing belt, I have now got round to changing the oil and doing a general service (sparks, air filter, oil + filter) of my dad's 307SW

She's a 2004 307SW 1.6 TU5JP4 petrol envy trim. Even though my dad hasn't done the miles, she hasn't seen an oil change in 3 years (not my choice)

The main dealer ruined the sump in 2022 so we tried using a pump down dipstick, doesn't fit, so I resolved to change filter and go for the oil when I have a min to take off sump if required or tap a new thread or something

ANYWAY: I take off the plastic cap, withdraw it, the filter stays in. Pulling up on filter yields nothing. It turns about 20 degrees and then it gets stuck to the plastic bit in the centre below it (in the centre) which doesn't want to turn either. Manual, servicebox no good. I don't think it's supposed to be like this, is it? I tried turning it to find a point where it disengages, but it doesn't. Am I being stupid? Should I pull what feels way too hard. I believe its the filter + the plastic sticky out locator thing though.

Any ideas, Am I stupid?

Thanks everyone!

There are 2 types of filter housings. The "long" ones and the "short" ones. Being a 2004 engine, I'd say it's the short one.
I have had the long types of filters stick in the plastic housing before. But I haven't had any problems with the short ones.
With the long one, I had to destroy the used filter to get it out of the plastic lid.
I think it comes down to the manufacture of the filter. Some are manufactured to tighter (better) tolerances than others.
If you need to destroy the filter to get it out, then so be it.

Hi mate appreciate the help but I don't think you understand what I'm saying here (my poor wording) look at the title. The plastic housing is free and comes away no problem, almost as if its the wrong type of filter fitted. The filter is stuck fast in the metal piece and spring thingy attached to the engine. If I pull too hard it'll snap something and we really cannot have that. This is a routine job

I pressume you have this type of filter (picture attached). I had them stuck quite snuggly before but never that tight that they would not come out with some force. I would try to wiggle the filter from side to side and twist it simultaneously while trying to pull.
Also make sure it is not stuck by "vacuum". Is it tilting sligtly? The bottom part might be just sucked to the metal counterpart.
Does it have plastic bottoms and top or is just the "paper" bare filter? If it has the plastic parts I would destroy the upper part (be carefull not to drop some parts into the engine) and took the bottom part by the plastic with pliers. It should be easier because all force will be on the holding part.

You seem to have missed my point but never mind.
I have a blurb on the different oil filters and housings over in the C3 owners site. It's relevant to all "TU" engines. Click >HERE<
The big question is; which one do you have?
There are pictures of the filter housings that might give you an idea as to where the filter might get stuck.
My original point was that you might just have to tear the filter apart to get it out!!!

SOLVED and thanks for your advice. It took an awful lot of pulling and wiggling but just as I was about to get destructive it came loose. It was indeed the type with the plastic locator on, not the smaller one!
