TU3JP clicking when hot
Hi, our Peugeot 206, 1.4i 55kW (TU3JP) started ticking from top of the engine when it is up to temperature (around 80°C). It sounds almost like the valve clearence is bad, but I have checked it twice and it's absolutely spot on. Oil pressure it 2,5 bar, which is quite good too (ideal would be around 2 bar, but dangerous is over 4 bar). The oil is around 4000 kms old (2500 miles). The oil level is at maximum. What else could be cause of this?

Re: TU3JP clicking when hot
When I changed the head gasket on one of my C3's it made a horrible clacking sound from the rocker area (TU3JP KFV engine) on initial startup. Found one of the rockers hitting the splash plate covering the rockers.
You might try removing the splash plate temporarily and see?
It's very thin metal and bends easily.

Re: TU3JP clicking when hot
Already thought of that, but my problem only starts when the engine gets hot. If it was bent, it would clack even cold. But I already inspected it as I was doing valve clearance and there is good gap between them. But thank you for suggestion.

Is this an 8V or 16V engine?

It's 8V. I know they tend to be more clickier, but this seems a bit too much for my liking.

Re: TU3JP clicking when hot
Both mine are quite clicky but then again both are 35 years old... I put the clickiness down to the quite wide exhaust tappet clearance at 0.4mm. It only needs to be a tiny bit on the excessive side to get considerably more noisy in my experience...Arkis wrote: 28 Mar 2025, 12:09 It's 8V. It did once concern me but after checking the valve clearances on both cars were spot-on I no longer fret about it...

Yes, the exhaust has 0,4 mm. Intake is 0,2 mm. Mine is "only" 20 years old, but these engines (TU3 in general) is from early 90s... it's old technology. I looked up some videos on youtube and some are even louder than ours... but still, it scratches my brain, if it is all right.

Re: TU3JP clicking when hot
I have 2 C3's with TU3JP engines. Both of mine tend to be noisy on start up and get "quieter" when warmed up.
I have done the head gasket (and consequently adjusted the rocker clearance) on both. But one is significantly louder (clackyer) than the other. I have checked the clearances a number of times.
I don't know if its relevant, but I had the head straightened and a "valve job" done on the "quieter" one when I did the head gasket. Both head gaskets were done within about a year of each other.
Both are 2003 vintage so I don't think there is any sort of production differences between the two. Oh, and the "noisy" one has 50,000Km LESS miles on it!
So despite having over 200,000Km on the clock, the "older" engine produces more power, is quieter and consumes far less oil than its counterpart! I bought both cars second hand 3 or 4 years ago.

Re: TU3JP clicking when hot
Solved. It was bad injector gasket. It had to be sligtly torn and when the engine got hot, it expanded and was releasing gases making the clicking noise. On Friday it finally torn and started clacking like crazy. At that point I tried to find leak because it sounded like a leak and when I sprayed brake cleaner at the injector the engine started to stutter. I took it apart and voala, rubber o-ring was torn in half. I resealed all injectors (both ends) and engine is purring nicely now.
