C3 key fob not working

The fob won't operate the central locking. I've changed the batteries in both remotes. Done the put key in ignition , turn on, hold lock button. Did work but just for a small time. If I operate the lock button with the key just under the steering wheel, it works the central locking. As soon as you move the key a couple of inches away ,it stops working. I've managed to lock the doors the manual way, by turning the screw by the door lock but can't find anyway to lock the boot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's a 2008 Citroën C3. Thanks

Are the new batteries recently bought, if not they might not be any good.
