E-2008 Grinding noises from brakes

Unread post by Citroenman3 »

Hi all a New user here
Have had many Citroën models in past loved them all. Time for a change, so this time trying out Peugeot. Now run a new
e-2008 with so far just under 100 miles on clock. Beautiful car preferred this to the new Citroën C3 Aircross ev or hybrid.
Didn't think would need advice so early on so here goes...
There is a what appears a Very Loud grinding/ groaning noise coming from the front brakes / suspension area. As it's an ev car and so quiet any noise is noticed. This happens at a very low speed in fowards or reverse, if you apply the brakes on and off heavily the Really Loud grinding noise appears briefly.
Did notice quite bit of scoring on front discs not sure if this could be relevant.
Straight back to Dealer who is looking at car now but initially said probably due to being an ev car with it's extra weight
But I did not notice this on the Demo e-2008 or a colleagues car ( same model)
Also his discs are smooth not scored.
Any help would be much appreciated as the Dealer today said the noise is normal and all new cars have scoring on the discs. Sorry for the long winded question. Cheers Martin

Hi and welcome.
The dealer is talking absolute crap to fob you off. There should be no scoring on brake discs and the manufacturer sizes them according to the weight of the car they build, whether it’s an ice or ev.
There’s a number of things that could be causing the scoring (incorrect assembly of the brakes, delaminated pads, seized caliper carrier, dislodged anti-squeal shims etc) right down to something as simple as a stone caught in the pads. It’s impossible to know without seeing them tbh.
Do you have any photo of the scoring? You can add photos to posts on here if you go into ‘full editor and preview’, add an attachment at the bottom and then place it inline.

It's to soon to be a classic "mechanical failure". This will be something less scary like stuck rock under the pad or pad not returning correctly because the contact points were not lube etc... Or maybe even surface rust? EVs don't use much braking since the motors do the braking so the discs could have some rust.
Even with heavy cars, there should not be a grinding noise from the brakes. Time to remove the wheel, caliper a check if the brakes are moving correctly (not dragging) and if there isn't some dirt under pads. If everything seems fine I would try to do some heavy braking so the pads even out.

Maybe the car has been stored a long time in a dusty/sandy area and it has got on the brake pads friction surface. Check the door sticker with the RPO number in a calculator to see when the car was built.

Hi Guys thanks for replies car has stood at Docks since Nov last year.
( See pics attached)
This is how car was delivered also straight from there not via a Dealer then these Issues started immediately, also handbrake sticking on unable to release so Dealer looking at this too still saying ev cars heavy so will make some noise ( but these are Loud clonks with grinding noises . So Doing full examination of braking system not taking car back until satisfactory!

The parking brake sticking is quite usuall with these. I have C4 Picasso and the parking brake sticks too when it's wet. I would normally not engage the parking brake but sice it's automatic, I can't turn it off (because of the loud alarm which wakes everybody around). So in wet and cold the brake just freezes or lightly rusts to the disk and you need to tear it... That's why I don't like e-brake.

But your discs look not so good for a brand new car. They are heavily pitted and there is quite a good amount of rust too. I would assume there was some dirt/rocks on the pad and it made grooves in the disc.

When at the dealer ask them to show you the scoring on all the other cars they are selling. I would still check the RPO number since if at the docks from November it is older than that. With the rust and scoring the discs look older than 100 miles, could the mileage have been clocked ?

Thanks yes checking this also seen other new cars there with no scoring on discs .This is why I think they have taken it back in quickly for full investigation. No mileage is correct seen proof. Will advise on outcome
