Citroen C3 Phase II 2011 engine fan stays on after turning car off

Hello!

I've had this car for around a year now but lately I've been having this issue more and more. During driving, sometimes the check engine light starts flashing and then disappears after a few flashes (couldn't keep count since it's a lot). When this happens I know that the engine fan will turn on. After I turn off the car it will start and will stay on for around 5 minutes, afterwards it will stop. It will turn on again after I turn on the car and turn it off. The only way to turn it off is to leave the car on without driving for ~10 minutes.

Mechanics have not been able to identify the issue. There were previous issues with the engine (wouldn't start, etc) but those have been fixed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried using a Citroen dealer ? Do you have any diagnostic fault codes that would have been stored when the engine management light came on ?

If it is a diesel it might be doing a dpf regeneration. We had a 2010 C3 with the petrol 1.4 vti engine and the fan on that would run when not expected and it turned out it had a known fault of a batch of bad coolant temperature sensors. The official Citroen fix (at no cost to us) was to add a second sensor to the thermostat housing at the air bleed point with a short wiring loom and leave the old sensor in place but not connected.

If the engine light is actually flashing, and not just coming on and going off, then the air/fuel mixture is over rich and you run the risk of destroying the catalytic converter!!!

If you have air conditioning, in your car, then you probably have a variable speed radiator/condenser fan. The two common failure modes are; the electronic fan speed controller built into the fan is faulty. Or the power relay for the speed controller is faulty.
