Citroen Berlingo juddering at idle, EML on...HELP!

Unread post by Berlingomotor »

Hey,

I have a petrol Berlingo multispace 1.3l 'forte'. It's 2003 with 70k miles.

The issue happened today driving home. While sat in traffic the engine began juddering/pulsing. Rpms didn't seem to move (?) but the juddering was bad, when I accelerated and increased RPMS the juddering reduced.

As I pulled away the engine management warning light began to false and beep and after a couple of minutes it stopped, and since then the engine management light stayed on solid, not flashing.

I managed to get home, the engine smelt pretty bad but there wasn't any obvious smoke etc. the engine temperature is normal.

I plugged in the code reader and have two codes:

P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction - Bank 1 Sensor 1

And

P0130 O2 Sensor Circuit – Bank 1 Sensor 1

Now I THINK the bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor is working - If I have the correct one I used a multimeter to test the resistance and voltage which were normal.

Any ideas what the cause could be? The exhaust pipe near the catalytic converter has a hole that needs repairing. I wonder if this could be messing with the oxygen/fuel balance and cause such a big issue?

Any advice is hugely appreciated. I am really struggling financially and if I can fix this myself I must do that 🤞🙂

Doubt something of this age and simplicity has more than one O2 Sensor. Given you have circuit faults for both heater and sensor, I would be checking the earth.

If your code reader does live data then you could also look at the values from the sensor, once the engine is warm it should be constantly switching so not a steady value. Before the engine warms up I think the sensor does not do much so your car might run a bit better for a short while.

If not the O2 sensor then other things like spark plugs can cause juddering if faulty. I had something similar on a petrol Saab and it turned out one of the spark plugs had a fault once hot.

Although not directly indicated by those fault codes, I would be suspecting a faulty ignition coil. You could unplug the primary side of each coil one at a time and check that they are all contributing to the running of the engine.

Yes, as hinted at above, O2 sensor codes shouldn't be read literally - as in that those codes mean there is a fault with the sensor itself.
The P0130 code means that what the ECU is seeing from the sensor is out of range, which could be the sensor at fault, the wiring to it - or it could be that is all working perfectly and the mixture is completely out of whack (which indicates fuelling problems such as incomplete combustion, excess or too lean fuel mixture etc.).

The P0135 code is likely to be more straightforward - there is a problem with the heater circuit in the O2 sensor (faulty heater inside the sensor, loss of ground or 12v feed to the heater etc.).
