A day of disasters - do they come in threes?

Unread post by mickthemaverick »

:?

When I went out this morning to do the work on the car I was greeted by our 'downstream' neighbour who has just had drainage engineers in to investigate the sewerage smell in their house. They found and cleared a blockage further downstream but suggested they would come back next Monday to inspect upstream in an attempt to determine the source of stones which had caused the blockage. That means the next manhole upstream is ours which, unfortunately, is sited in our garage floor. The garage is carpeted for general working comfort but then all the shelving and storage are on the carpet. I decided to cut access to the manhole rather than pull up the entire carpet but even that resulted in considerable disruption:

However I then cleared the surround and handle cavity to allow the chaps easy access when they are ready.

This means that SWMBO cannot put her car to bed for the next 5 days which she claimed was unfair. My point was that I had half of that kit out today for the work I was doing and I couldn't see the point of putting it all back and then having to shift it all again on Sunday!! She was not impressed and went indoors to make herself some scrambled eggs in the microwave. :-D

I heard a loud 'pop', almost a bang, and she reappeared covered in scrambled egg. "It exploded all over me" she said grinning, "That'll teach me not to moan about things!"

I sympathised while holding back a grin!! :-D

So two down..................?

Talk about egg on her face

Not the best location for a manhole cover but better I suppose than a house near here that has one in the kitchen :o

I believe as a result of an extension being built to accommodate the new, enlarged kitchen and the builders neglecting to divert the drainage and move the manhole...

Good job all mine are easily accessible outdoors given how often I need to rod them  Not my favourite job. It can be a bit of a S%^%$$y one at times

I am given to believe that the garage was built over the manhole against the architect's advice but now it is what it is. I have ordered a galvanised sheet to put across the covers once the work is done and hopefully prevent the handles getting clogged again and give a flatter surface for the carpet to lay on. :)

You could use the manhole as a pit if you need to work under the car. Might need hosing down before being allowed in the house again though.
