Dealer has wheels refurbished already signs of wear

Unread post by JamieLeeWV »

Hi guys. I brought a Peugeot a few weeks ago which I believe have diamond cut alloys? The dealer I got them from had them refurbished before putting the car up for sale, I then saw the car and purchased it (the refurbishment was not something we agreed as part of the sale the dealer did it off their own back)

About 2 weeks into owning this car the wheels already seem to be showing signs of yellowing, i am guessing moisture has gotten in behind the lacquer, i'm yet to wash the actual wheels and have only wiped them down when dirty, so havent used any acid based products on them.

My question is if I contact the dealer do they have to have them re done again for me? I'm guessing there is some sort of warranty on the refurbishment

Surely they shouldn't be showing signs of this barely a month after having them refurbished? Is this signs of a bad refurbishment? Or are diamond cut alloys just a big AVOID 🤔

Looks as if a normal lacquer spray can has been used. On our Cactus I used this on one of its wheels, also diamond cut and that went yellow and peeled off quite soon, again letting the wheel corrode. If the dealer is just going to do the same again you will be better off having it done properly, or just accept the wheels will not look good.

You still have to put the plastic wheel bolt covers back on, these just push on.

Looks like diamond cut alloys yes.
They are less durable than all over painted/coated alloys but absolutely should not go that quickly.
Certainly worth taking back to the dealer to see what they say, IMO - nothing to lose.

Would it be better get them powder coated? Does powder coating only allow one colour to be used on it though? Dealer has read my message but ignored for now, I'm guessing they don't want to do anything about it 😂

Yeah I might just get them done again. Do you think I should get them powder coated? As I don't fancy paying to have them done again and it happening so quickly, or does powder coating ruin the look of these?

What's the the best way to clean these wheels to protect them? I always wash my car myself, I haven't washed them with anything just yet apart from usual car shampoo.

Powder coating would be one colour only.
They wouldn't look as nice as the diamond cut finish, but would be more durable.

Good to know, thanks.

If I get them re done again I'll make sure it's a better job than the one that's been done.

Our 308 has the same wheels as yours. When they got kerbed (used as side parking sensors) I went over the rim scratches with a lacquer touch up pen just to stop them corroding. I clean them the same as the rest of the car with a sponge and soapy water (washing up liquid), nothing special needed. The original tyres have a rim protector so when replaced get the same type.

Two possibles....
Cheep lacquer badly mixed or over/fast cured under too strong a UV lamp or heat. Clear over silver/bare metal is very obvious if it yellows and low quality clear yellows !
Needs stripping and redone.

Powder coating (clear) will kill the diamond cut effect and is not really very durable as it is quite brittle and does not adhere chemically to the metal, a tiny chip in such a thin (brittle) coat will let in moisture and spread.. Silvers are quite advanced now so could look good if a advanced powder is used....only show cars/pampered cars that never see salt etc can have cut wheels and keep the looking good.....every day car ?..... it is a BAD choice IMHO
