Eolys Additive Question

Unread post by APJ89 »

Hi,
I bought a 2018 Peugeot 308sw GTLine last week, after a couple of days Engine light came on, so I checked Diags and it was a Low limit for Additive (P15B3). Took it back to the dealer who said it was just a sensor and cleared the code.

Now I'm worried the DPF is going to get clogged (cars aren't my strongest subject, though I'm pretty handy and learn quickly). So my question is, can I check the actual level of the Eolys? If not, how long would it take for the car to show me the error again now it's been cleared? (I topped the fuel up straight after they cleared it, to see if it popped up).

Sorry if it's a dumb question, couldn't find any answers in the handbook or online 😅

Cheers,

Not without physically measuring it by removing the tank. The diagnostics will only report the estimated quantity of fluid remaining as it is not physically measured.

The trouble with a used car is that you don’t know whether the previous owner has reset the additive counter without actually adding any fluid to trick the engine ECU into thinking the tank is full. So if the pump is trying to add the rolls and there’s none there, then it can damage the pump and may be why the fault is being put up. Some unscrupulous people do this to avoid having it filled, when they know they’re going to be selling it on. What mileage is this vehicle? Please also provide the VIN and I’ll see what size tank it is.

Your dealer can’t just make the assumption it is a sensor - what sensor are they talking about as the only other sensor is the fuel tank flap open sensor.

You either need to check the quantity physically by emptying and measuring it or having the tank topped up and resetting the additive counter.

Not a dumb question at all - and you're right to be concerned and want to check (because the consequences could be as you describe).
Was it just a generic used car dealer that you bought it from/went back to, or a Peugeot dealer?

Marc, is the OP likely to get another warning before it gets to the point of the filter being damaged (e.g. would it know it wasn't injecting the fluid and flag a warning for that asap)?

"Took it back to the dealer who said it was just a sensor and cleared the code." This sounds to me as a scam.Except if he had already filled it up with eolys fluid and didn't reset the counter without explaining all that and confuse the owner.

P15B3 generally requires the additive level to be topped up and possibly the engine ECU software updated if necessary, then clear the fault codes.

This code isn't related to the DPF blocking at this point - it's specifically for the additive filling / engine ECU software update if required.

If the DPF is at risk of clogging, then a specific message will be presented stating 'Risk of Particle Filter Clogging' or similar. That will be triggered by the DPF differential pressure sensors.

The filter can regenerate on its own without the need for assisted regeneration so long as the conditions are met - exhaust temperature at about 550°C instead of the 450°C needed for assisted regeneration, so cruising for a decent journey to allow the exhaust gasses to get to the correct temperature and without short stop and start journeys.

It would be helpful to know if the OP has any evidence of when the additive was last topped up, along with the VIN so I can see what capacity of tank he has, and of course the mileage of the vehicle that I asked for... so hopefully I can see tank capacity for this vehicle and expected top up mileage.
