Gear knob removal...

Unread post by RichardW »

I need a new knob :-D

Plasti-chrome is flaking on the old one, and I cut my finger on it the other day. New Chinesium procured, but I can't shift the old one. 6 speed so supposed to just pull off, but not by me!

Slide hammer? Heat it up? Long pry bar or cold chisel under the edge and a medium hammer to try and persuade it off? Perhaps I can make a tool to clamp behind it so I can bump it rather than just a straight pull.

Don't really want to wreck it in case the new one doesn't fit, but that might be the ultimate solution...

Open ended spanner on the shaft and belt it upwards?

Preferably with a towel on it to protect the windscreen or you head

I used part of an old towel around the knob on my 307 to protect it for precisely the same reason as you - the new one didn't look like it was going to fit! But I put a pair of multigrips around the towel and jigged the old knob back and forth until it came loose enough to pull off.

(This editor doesn't seem to know what multigrips are - it shows me a spelling error. I thought it was a common name, but not according to the editor. In case it isn't understood, here's an image.

Aah, Gordon pliers or water pump pliers to me.

These knobs are notoriously stiff 😂, :hole: they will eventually lift off, but ensure you have good dental insurance cover Richard!

I replaced the cream leather 6 speed one on my X7 with a new one when I got it because it was a bit grubby and had a similar battle. I think I upsquirted a bit of silicone spray with the pipe attachment around the base and just persevered with it.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

I’m curious to know if Richard has survived his attempts to remove (and replace) his gear knob.

I don’t like seeing different suggestions being put forward and there being no update on the success, or otherwise.

Not yet, had another go yesterday but it is firmly stuck. More violence is required!

If we don't hear from you for a week or so should we assume that you succeeded in pulling the gear knob off but at great personal cost?

Violence?

I was thinking just yesterday how civil this place is, especially when I compare it to other forums I have seen in operation. Do I need to revise my opinion now?

What method(s) have you tried using since you read all of the helpful suggestions put forward here?

Only violence against the gear knob, none against any of you helpful chaps!

Tried grips, now have a set of teeth marks either side. Spanner underneath and heaving on it - no room to get in an hammer under it. My other thought is to cut a piece of timber to act as a fulcrum, and then lever it up with the spanner or crowbar, possibly with the aid of a hammer to bump it up. After that, it is dismantling in situ - hence the violence part....

This topic on the Peugeot forum has pictures of the knob and gear lever which might be the same as yours. It shows slots inside the knob so trying twisting it would not help, it can only move upwards. It is suggested warming with a hair dryer might help removal. https://www.peugeotforums.com/threads/5 ... 18.372760/

It would appear heat is your friend....

Put the 3kW fan heater we use for defrosting the cars next to it for 10 mins, and it just came off in my hand like it wasn't even clipped on

So we'll have to stop with the knob jokes now 😂
