Xantia Engine.

Post by adzbaby »

As ome of you may know I recently changed over my engine in g'box in my 1.9td for one that had done 9ok (40k less than my old one).
The other car I got the engine from I drove back from birmingham to hampshire the other week but I drove it home in the dark and therefore didn't notice the big puff of black smoke out the back when I put my foot down. when the car starts there isn't a significant cloud of smoke and none at all when its idling. When the engines reving at 2-3k rpm still no smoke but when you depress the accelerator fast and rev the engine from idling to up to 3.5/4k rpm a big black splurge comes out. When you are driving and and put your foot down a nasty black cloud comes out?
Due to the colour and the action thats causes the smoke I think its safe to say it excess diesel burning off. My old engine would puff out a wee bit (as with most diesels) when you accelerated hard but nothing like this!

Any ideas?
Its not a blocked air filter (thats new and I have removed this to check and still puffs) but I haven't checked all the air pipes. Woudl appreciate any comments. Also does this sound serious, cause i hope not considering the amount of effort I went through to put the bastard thing in. Apart from the big clouds fo smoke the engine seems to run fine. Oh yeah also a funny symbol which isn't in my handbook which I have never see before is flashing up now, it looks like a pill lying vertical with 2 small pipes leading into it either side and its half filled in the bottom, like it contained fluid? What is that warning me about (its orange not red)?

I remember ( and this is without any exaggeration ) my Dad's old 405 used to completely hide all the cars behind it in a cloud of black smoke when the turbo came in. It was really funny. You couldn't see anything - god knows what they were thinking.
I think that had something to do with the fact that he never ever used the turbo (even on the motorway he would only do about 60) and after driving it on boost for a few miles the smoke would clear.
I'm sure you are all thinking 'how irresponsible, could have caused an accident' but the first time I had no idea - I just looked in my mirror and all I could see was black smoke and nothing else!

Hmm, It does sound like it either needs a good thrashing to clear out the soot or the pump need some adjustment....

It's very possible that the rotopump fuel calibration screw has been tinkered with.
Best (and not expensive) way is to let a diesel specialist re-tune the roto pump.

The warning light you describe sounds like the "Water in Diesel" warning light. This I beleive is supposed to mean that there is some water in the diesel filter that needs to be drained, but in my car this light glows randomly and no ammount of draining stops it.

Yeah thanks for the suggestions. I phoned a local diesel specialist and he suggested that I thrash it about for a couple of days to see if it clears any soot build up if not then I might take it in for a wee diagnostic.

Give it a damned good thrashing with a bottle of injector cleaner in there; my Xantia produced excellent smokescreens unitil I bit the bullet and gave it a thrashing to the 4000rpm mark for a couple of miles; the exhaust has been clean as a whistle ever since!

Thanks guys once again for the advice. I have thrashed the proverbials off the bastard and low and behold its accelerating clear now and not only that but performance is up a good 20% as well. Job done and it was fun whilst doing it. ;) And if anyone is requiring 1.9td xantia parts in Hampshire or thereabouts I have a whole spare car (minus g'box!)

my Xantia smokes bad when as normal i get stuck in traffic for about 30 minutes and then i boot it but then it normally clears, the water in fuel light seems to go on and off as it pleases which i believe is quite normal we just have to put up with these minor flaws
