Hi All,
Have some questions after a strange day yesterday, got stuck for about 6 hours.
Started car about lunchtime, it was slow to start and took 3 turns of the key before it fired, which is unusual. I went to a local viewpoint to walk the dog and when I went back to the car it wouldn't fire. The starting motor was turning over (while I had battery) and it was doing everything except the fuel pump did not appear to be pushing fuel through. We nearly started it with ether alone but we agreed the prob was with the fuel pump.
I opened the relay box under the bonnet (see pic) and all the fuses looked fine. I could hear some clicking as I was trying to start coming from the far right hand side relays (green & purple). After some tapping and rehousing of the relays the car fired up better than before. Within a couple of seconds of turning the key it started.
Have been out today and started/stopped it about 4 times, every time it started fine (better than yesterday lunchtime) and you wouldn't guess it had a problem. So I can only assume the electric fuel pump is working fine but the relay that controls it is on the blink.
Can anyone tell me exactly what those 2 relays are on the right of the pic (Purple and green)? What they do (Haynes doesn't say much), the size, and how to get new ones?
Steve

What is the RP number of the car? There were changes during 1998.
The fuel pump relay is probably in the ECU box on the other side of the car.

Re: Xantia 2.0l SX relays (under bonnet on right side)
Hi and thanks for quick response.
Im not sure the RP number but it was registered in the last week of 1998, which is strange because they say the 2.0l hdi SX with 110bhp wasn't sold until 1999, has been fun sourcing the right parts. I end up having to select it as a 1999 car to get to the right variant.
I know exactly what you mean about the fuel pump relay being on the left side in seperate box with the ECU. I purchased a new 1 not long ago as the old 1 was playing up, I replaced but it can still be abit uncertain. This did not appear to be that problem.
Only when we tapped the green and purple relays on the right side did the fuel pump seem to allow itself to push fuel through and it started fine, has been fine since. I am about 90% certain the problem was with the relays on the right side.
This is why I need to know what they do, are they immobilisers for the fuel pump or something else?
Thanks
Steve

This is the most likely relay diagram for your car. None of those seem relevant to your current issue.

Re: Xantia 2.0l SX relays (under bonnet on right side)
I think the RP number is located in one of the front door surrounds below the windscreen pillar on Xantias. Can't recall if it's left or right. It's helpful to get this because a change to specification my have happened the next day after one RP number date. In the old days at Citroen (before PSA in the late 70s) the production of any model ran from October one year to August the following and then they did a month's shut down so a '69 model year DS for example could be manufactured as early as October 1968. I don't know if that was still the case through the PSA era affecting Xantias etc but finding your RP number will pinpoint the exact spec of the car.stevestix8 wrote: 30 Jan 2025, 16:23 Hi and thanks for quick response.

Re: Xantia 2.0l SX relays (under bonnet on right side)
Thankyou both for your responses.
I can confirm the fuse diagram shown above appears to be exactly the same as mine and the 2 suspect relays are number 1&2 which makes no sense because they just appear to be air compressor and air conditioning? The most likely relay on that diagram is number 6 as this is the starter inhibitor relay, which is similar to what happened. But the clicking sound definately came from the far right relays 1&2, so I am still investigating.
It is possible when I opened up the ECU relay box on the left that I corrected the fault by reseating (fiddling with) the fuel pump relay (at the same time as the relays on right were tapped). This fits more with the symptoms as all appeard fine except pump wasn't pushing fuel through.
Have driven it again today, started / stopped several times and all seems good. Very quick response on start-up, purrs to life with very little effort, it appears the relays are working fine again, or at least for now.
Will research further and let you know when resolved.

RP number on a Xantia is in the engine bay on the bulkhead.

In 1998 it moved to the tyre pressure sticker in the door jamb...

Fair play, didn't know that - getting with the modern Citroen set up by then!
