Clearing Engine Mngm't Codes with Diagbox query

Unread post by Byngo9 »

Hi all,
I have diagbox 9.180 running native on windows 10. I have been fault finding some issues with our 2014 C4 Picasso B78. VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
The faults I have fixed were broken abs wiring rear drivers side and passenger side door mirror broken wiring which prevented the blind-spot system from working.
These faults seem to be remedied now but I wanted to do a purge of other faults thrown up in the report, particularly any that may be significant and drive for a week and run another global test and see what comes back. I have mostly done this but had an extra warning message when it came to clearing the 11 faults listed under the Engine Management ECU. It said something about maintenance steps needing to be performed I think so I didn't proceed any further. How do I proceed with that please?

The Engine Mngt ECU faults that concern me are below if anyone could offer some further insight or experience. At this stage, (short test drive after repair) the only thing that doesn't seem to be working is stop / start (yet again and it hasn't for a while). The battery was a new AGM compatible unit about 18 months ago. The new battery was prompted by the fact I knew it hadn't been changed in the 5 years of owning the car and Stop/ Start wasn't working. The new battery did get S/S working again at the time. That's all that I notice is wrong.

P1AA5: Voltage maintaining device - Internal fault - partial destruction of switch.
P1382: Ancillary Drive Belt(s) Fault in coherence between the engine speed and
the alternator speed.
P1694 Controlled Engine Start and Stop - Fault on the starter motor control line
P0571 Inter-systems CAN - Lack of coherence of the brake pedal position
sent by the BSI

Thanks in advance.

Hi there
Have any of those remaining faults actually been investigated to diagnose if they are genuine etc and any repair carried out to correct them?

You should be aware that the stop start system on your vehicle is not only to do with the main AGM battery. It is fitted with a specific Stop Start system that you won't be able to see as it's hidden under the front left wing and contains a network voltage maintaining device and ultra-capacitor that are the main components of the system.

The P1AA5 fault relates to this:
Fault Code: P1AA5
Description of Fault:
  • Voltage retaining device: Internal fault - Partial destruction of switch. he switch internal to the voltage retaining device between the battery and the body earth is damaged
Limiting the circulation of current (For 480 ms).
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message: "SERVICE" warning lamp.
Symptoms:
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine
  • Malfunction of the Stop and Start switch or its LED
Suspect Areas:
  • Voltage retaining device

Fault Code: P1382
Description of Fault:
  • Ancillary drive belt: Fault in coherence between the engine speed and the alternator speed
[Description of the diagnostics: Excessive slipping of the belt detected by comparing the alternator speed with the engine speed (for 5 seconds)
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Automatic restarting impossible following stopping of the engine (Requires restarting of the engine using the ignition key)
  • Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message: "SERVICE" warning lamp
Symptoms:
  • Problem with automatic restarting of the internal combustion engine
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine
  • Malfunction of the Stop and Start switch or its LED
Suspect Areas:
  • Ancillary drive belt
  • Engine speed sensor
  • Electrical harnesses
  • Connectors

Fault Code: P1694
Description of Fault:
  • Controlled engine start and stop: Starter control line faulty. Communication fault between ECUs detected for 2 secs.
Conditions of activation of the diagnostics: Under starter
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • When starting a warm engine
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message "SERVICE" warning lamp
Symptoms:
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine ECU
  • Intersystem CAN network
  • Starter

Fault Code: P0571
Description of Fault:
  • Intersystems CAN: Lack of coherence of the brake pedal position sent by the BSI.
Description of the diagnostics: "Main brake pedal switch out of service" information received by the engine management ECU on the CAN
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Reversible deactivation of the vehicle cruise control
Symptoms:
  • No effects immediately perceptible to the customer
  • No automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine (If the vehicle has the Stop and Start system)
Suspect Areas:
  • Brake pedal switch
  • Electrical harnesses
  • Connectors

Thanks for the breakdown Marc. Car not throwing any service light ( since I fixed the ABS wiring anyway).
No slipping of the aux belt that I'm aware of but I'll have to investigate the belt condition and tensioners I guess. ( I was planning to renew cam belt and aux belt this summer anyway).
Stop start I'm not so fussed about persee, but something potentially related back to a root cause of aux belt raised my level of concern.
So what about that Diagbox warning of needing to perform / confirm some maintenance operations first, when trying to clear the faults. I can't remember exactly what it said but how do I proceed through the menus to clear the faults. ( I want to see what comes back initially).??

Without knowing the exact message / fault / context, I can't advise regarding the 'maintenance' message you are receiving.

Ok, I'll take another look at the w'end and screen shot it. The message about maintenance operations only appears when going through the motions of clearing any engine management ECU faults. I have not seen it when clearing other ECU faults.

It probably said you need to create a maintenance event, this is just a record of when the codes are cleared. It only allows 10 or something, after that it just says you can't do it, but let's you proceed anyway.

Yes, if it's the memory slots for diagnostics, just ignore it. It allows something like 50 memory slots for recording fault clearing - and then warns that you won't be able to save any more.

Yes, that makes sense as I remember seeing something about 4 of 10 slots used.
