DS5 belt snapped

Unread post by Kandzsem »

Hello all,
Unfortunately, the alternator belt of my DS5 2015 HDi diesel is snapped, but I was able to charge the battery with an external charger - 70ah battery, with an 1A charger, for about 21hours.
I can start the car and all (of course there is check engine) Is it safe to go to the repair station to have it replaced - which is like 15 minutes away from me?
Thank you for your answer!

Hi

It seems that your belt drives the alternator, power steering pump and the AC compressor?

My C4 Blue HDI belt snapped on the way to Bristol Airport a couple of years ago. I turned off anything that would drain the battery and managed to drive the last 8 miles or so like that. I even had to stop the car for half an hour as were early and it restarted fine. The power steering was unaffected on my C4. I think you'd be fine with a fully charged battery, but a workout for your arms lol.

Easier to get a mobile mechanic out though or RAC/AA recovery?

Hope that helps and good luck.

Lights off, blower off, and other electricals etc. and it will run just fine for a decent short distance on just battery power.

When changing the belt it's worth checking whether the alternator clutch works smoothly. If it's sticking it will cause the new belt to snap way before its time.

Not directly comparable as that had engine driven power steering pump, but years ago my 306 HDi's auxiliary belt snapped - 27 miles from home, that made it back all that way without giving up. By Eck it was nerve wracking though!!!

I'm pretty sure you'll be ok with a fully charged battery and a 15 minute journey.
