Hi All
I’m looking for some help the rubber Rocker cover gasket on our Peugeot 1.9td 2001 has started leaking, it had a new fitted 700miles ago. The new gasket was a Victor Reniz fitted to a new cylinder head and totally cleaned beforehand and yet it still leaked, so I’m looking for help on how to combat this. Has anyone else had this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That’s very unusual? Normally those rubber cam over gaskets are fit and forget items.
I’ve fitted 100’s and never had issues.
Firstly are you sure the oil is coming from the gasket. If it is it may be due to the fixings not putting enough pressure on the rubber gasket. You say it’s had a new cylinder head? perhaps the cam over studs are different?

Most common mistake is over tightening them.....

Hi
Thanks for your reply’s, ok I’ve got another new rubber gasket, two things firstly should I use any type of glue between the gasket and the Cylinder head? Secondly the Haynes manual says torque to 20nm which I did, and then the Brookland books says 6 ft lb. Any suggestions.

Use no sealant - just ensure the mating surfaces are spotlessly clean.Barney00731102012 wrote: 19 Jan 2025, 17:25 Hi

The torque setting is critical. Not too tight. 20Nm seems a bit excessive to me. There is a risk of warping if too tight. 6 ft lbs sounds about right. Too tight and you risk warping the cover.
Do up to 6 ft lb and if it still weeps, equally tighten just a bit tighter...

Re: Peugeot 1.9 rocker cover gasket
Removed leaking rubber rocker cover gasket today, yes torquing rocker bolts to 20nm is far to much when I removed the gasket the rocker had cut through the gasket hence leaking, so I’ve cleaned both rocker cover and cylinder so it’s spotless and fitted a new one and now torqued the 3 rocker cover bolts to 6 ft lbs / 8.5 nm and see if this now cures it. Oh yes and I’ve not used any jointing seal on the gasket.( Fingers crossed). Thanks for advice from other member it’s greatly appreciated

Re: Peugeot 1.9 rocker cover gasket
Just a quick update we’ve got to Scotland today after stopping in Wales and the Lake District for a couple of weeks, And would you believe it the rocker cover gasket has started to weep oil again. I thick at the moment I’m going to leave it until I’m back home in mid April as knowing luck I will make it worse, but god knows how to stop it. I think the best thing to do is throw the hot potato to Peugeot and let them sort it out.

How old is it? A Peugeot dealer will likely pull your pants down, i’d be tempted to remove, clean & re fit with a bit of RTV sealant. You shouldn’t have to on this type of gasket but if you have replaced it twice now its worth a shot.

To be honest I don’t really have a lot of faith in garages, never really had any joy with any, seems the job doesn’t get done properly or you end up paying through the nose for it, that’s just my personal experience. As I’m totally at the other end of the country to where we live I’m going to bare with it and see how it goes.
