Which coolant (antifreeze) goes in a C3 Picasso 2010?

Unread post by Aquilani »

i got a C3 Picasso 2010 1.6 Petrol VTi 120hp 88kw with really low miles, i have it just about 3 months now. i'm planning a longer trip shortly and i see that the coolant color is more or less brown-ish and quite dark red. is that normal or is that not good and it's maybe that color because before i got it the car for 14 years did really low miles and was in a garage non stop. maybe it's still the first, original coolant and it wasn't even ever changed or topped up to max?

For example on my previous Xsara Picasso the coolant was blue and on my brother's Opel Astra it was pink-ish. But on this C3 Picasso it's brown-ish, dark red, and i don't know which new coolant i should put in.

Also, if i bleed and get out all the current brown-ish coolant, must i then fill it up with new specific color coolant or can maybe i choose which one to put it?

EDIT: yeah found out the car needs G12 coolant. but i think there's no problem, because all 2 or 3 times i looked at the suspicious dark brown coolant was always at night or almost dark. today was the first time i really looked at it in sunlight and the coolant is red as can be, no brown or darker. so my mistake, sorry.

The coolant colour is not a good guide to which type it is, the makers can make it any colour they want. On newish Citroens I've had pale yellow and on replacement the colour they have put in has been blue. To be red a previous owner may have changed the coolant or topped up with a red coolant. If you are not sure about the strength of the coolant you could put a bit in a freezer and it should not freeze. This will not tell you about the corrosion inhibitor strength though.

Keep an eye on the oil level since we found our C3 with a 1.4 vti engine used oil, even when at 12000 miles when we got it. You will have a timing chain and these can wear, on our C3 it started to give a fault code about timing on around 50000 miles.
