Short introduction and rt6 question

Unread post by Citroen_At_Ease »

Hi there,

After my xsara Picasso died I bought another Citroën, this time a C3 1.2 vti with 205,000 km on the clock.
After doing some research, I found out about the timing belt/oil issues, and the other related issues that are troubling this engine. However, I bought the car from a local mechanic, who himself bought it with a botched engine. He fixed the engine. In the process of doing that, he replaced the timing belt and clutch, and a lot of other things. Showed pictures of the repairs done as proof he did the things he said he has done. Thus far, pretty happy with the car. I have however a question about the rt6 radio. It is currently running the rneg2.75 firmware. Is there a changelog from all the firmware, or can somebody tell me about the (dis)advantages of doing an upgrade to rneg2.86? I read that it can in some cases brick the radio. If the changes are just minor things i don't want to take the chance to brick the device, I already managed to upgrade the maps from 2014 to the latest version, but doubting about doing a firmware upgrade as well, Curious about other opinions,

Hi and welcome.

1) Ensure you have the timing belt checked regularly (it is visible from the oil filler) and always use the specific oil recommended by Citroen for this engine of which must meet the PSA specification.

2) As far as the RT6 goes, my advice is to leave it well alone. That is correct - the last version 2.86 is a major update and can reset the Head Unit to factory settings, leaving the configuration missing for the vehicle. It is a risk and if this happens you may lose functionality, so if the system is working, leave it. PSA don't provide changelogs unfortunately.

My information suggests your C3 will have a CAN 2004 architecture and therefore you may be able to upgrade to V2.80 without issue, but I certainly would avoid 2.86.

Thanks Marc for the info given.

I'm not to concerned for the belt at the moment since it is brand new. I will off course check it regularly.
I allready found a drop in replacement radio system from our Friends on Ali express. Still debating myself ;-) . Thus far not too happy with the navigation capabilities from the rt6. Find it pretty sluggish, and often to late at calling out directions, if even at all. The drop in has android auto, so a lot more convenient i think, and it specifies to also take over things like park assist etc.
Maybe it is worth a try to update the rt6 to v2.8 to see if it reacts a bit faster or not.

Ok, so if you want to attempt an update to V2.80, here are the files in ZIP format. Decompress the contents only - (not the zip file itself) onto a freshly FAT32 Formatted USB.

Keep the engine running at all times and do not press any buttons or controls during the update.
