1.6hdi 110 vacuum hose renewal

Unread post by xsara92 »

Hi,
I'm hoping someone might have done this before on a 1.6hdi.
My Xsara Picasso having this engine runs nicely for the most part, however it intermittently hesitates when trying to accelerate over 2k rpm, with a light juddering.
Also at the highest speeds, the engine gets quite noisy and appears to struggle. Despite these two problems it is quiet and smooth at other times.
I found an old thread where somebody had similar symptoms with the same engine, and the problem turned out to be a leak in the hose from the vacuum pump to the turbo..

I can't find any videos online, and I'm wondering if this is a simple job or not. I know vacuum pump is at the front if the engine but can't see where the hose attaches to it. Looks like it would be enough to remove the solid plastic air inlet pipes for access? If anyone just had a photo showing this it could be enough to get me started, thanks!

ESP fault, or ABS? (initially thought a boost fault)

Unread post by xsara92 »

OK I realised that the (main) cause of the issue I have (had) was not a turbo boost problem, but ESP.

Eventually I remembered that the juddering symptoms described in the OP were worst when pressing the accelerator on sharp bends, e.g. leaving roundabouts. Problem was minor accelerating on the straight.
Put two and two together and tried turning ESP off. Juddering is largely eliminated and I'm pretty much happy with the car's performance.
Also explains poor mpg I have been having.

I've not proven this hypothesis fully though because I don't know if ESP stays off when I click if off on the dashboard or if it's automatically re-enabled after some interval...
I still get some rough cornering here and there, so don't know if it's the combined ABS/ESP system, as not sure when it's on or off.
Otherwise, I might have a more basic mechanics issue (like anti-roll bar)?

Does anyone know if the ESP module on Citroens from 2005 era was troublesome?
