Revs

Unread post by geordiekev1uk »

Evening all.

When I'm stationary and in neutral, my rev's are about 800. When I put the vehicle into 1st gear (I'm still stationary, foot still off the accelerator) the rev's go up to 1400!

Does anyone know why? It's happens when the engine is up to temperature. I can't recall if it happens when the engine is cold/still warming up.

Which car is this, year, engine, presumably a manual gear box ?
If you just push the clutch pedal down and leave the gear lever in neutral, do the revs increase or stay at 800 ?

Morning Paul,
It's a Citroen C3 Shine Puretech Stop/Start, 23 plate, 1.2 engine and yes a manual gearbox.

If I just push the clutch down and not move the gear stick from neutral, the revs stay at 800.

It is still under warranty so needs to go back to the dealer. If you start meddling you might void the warranty.

Cheers for the reply.

OK, I'll get it booked. I don't mess about with cars, I haven't a clue about engines lol. I was just curious if anyone knew what it was so I could tell the garage.

On some later vehicles, the engine revs increase to help prevent stalling when moving off. So may be normal to get some increase in engine speed as it's an anti-stall system.
The other reason is a cold engine - so the engine ECU can increase revs to help atomisation of the fuel.
Next if the revs are obviously too high, then you may have a faulty clutch position sensor.
