Hi
as per the thread title ive had the strut tops changed. Does anyone know the torque settings for the top bolts?
This is the top nut that sits beneath a plastic cap on top of the metal dome of the strut top mouting. The nut secured the thread from the top of the strut.
(i thought i had the workshop manual but no i only have the bodywork and electrical guides!)
thanks

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
They need to be tight Phil but not super-tight. No real need of a torque wrench - just do them up tight and all will be good.
At a guess, and going by feel, I'd say about 30 Nm would be adequate...

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
Cheers Jim
I really thought I'd have the exact figure but no I'm lacking the hydraulics booklet in my factory workshop manuals collection!
Azad told me " The tighten torque is very tight 25 Kgm or 245Nm " for the bx so I guess I'm gaining some idea of a ball park !
At moment it's finger loose. Not sure if garage left it like that or it's beded in? But either way I knew It wasn't right.
Ruddy thing...

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
245Nm is enormously tight Phil, that'll make your eye pop and the treads to disappear! I think you'll find a decimal point has been omitted... 24.5Nm sounds more reasonable...
Official Citroen documentation use an unusual torque unit of Da-M (or something similar) and that, if I recall correctly, is 10 times'ish bigger than the Nm figure...
If you try to do them to 245Nm you'll do serious damage!
Honestly, they really don't need to be mega-tight...

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
Do not know if this helps but in the Haynes for the 2004 C4 it gives 72 Nm and in the RTA manual for the 2010 C4 it gives 75 Nm. Citroen seem to use daN.m which need to be multiplied by 10 to give Nm. These are for the nut that holds the mounting/spring to the strut and also the nut that holds the strut to the wing. On these though an allen key needs to be used in the strut top to stop it turning and undoing the mounting nut so a torque wrench is a bit difficult to use.
Might also be a good idea to tighten it with the wheels pointing forward and on the ground or it might (or might not) pull to one side.

Thanks for the clarification PaulPaulC5 wrote: 31 Dec 2024, 17:38 Citroen seem to use daN.m which need to be multiplied by 10 to give Nm.
The figure you quote for the C4 will be good for conventional springy strut top nuts but will not be applicable to the Xantia and its hydraulic struts. The nuts Phil is referring to are at the tops of the strut pistons and overtightening could distort the machined taper on the top of the piston; this taper is responsible for sealing the hydraulic port between the strut and strut top. 72 or 74 Nm will be far too tight.

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
Happy New Year - daN.m are near enough the same torque as Kgm, so presumably a sop to motor trade practice while specifying a proper "force" as opposed to a "weight". Traditional British practice was to not understand there was a difference.

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
I have looked on an old version (2012) of Citroen service box and for the top nut it gives 45 Nm with thread lock. I would have done this sooner but it is on an old computer I had to get out and start up. This is for the Xantia and Xantia 2.
Happy New Year everyone and best wishes and hoping for nothing more than usual servicing on our cars.

Re: xantia strut top torque settings
BoL aligns with the service box info (45Nm / 33 lb/ft).
