What year is that?

Unread post by Vic Evans »

There is a post on here from yesterday where a UK based new member describes his car as a "66 plate".
I'm UK born & bred living in France for the last 22 years & I haven't got a clue how the system now works & what year that car is unless I Google it.
Given that this is a forum with a worldwide audience, who would also have no idea, might it be possible to remind posters to include the actual date of the vehicle ie 2014.

The system baffles me too. I usually employ Google to see what year my car is. Can never remember.

While I appreciate your comment there Vic it is very difficult to get any particular message to all users, especially new ones so I think it is easier to have a conversion chart handy for general reference. The RAC site has a good simple guide covering plates from 1983 to 2024 so I'd suggest it may be useful for an admin to copy this info into a reference post :-D https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/buyi ... ate-guide/

It's done like that to confuse the enemy

I think only the UK and Ireland use age related plates - you can draw your own conclusions as to why it's done like that :)

I have just studied that chart on the RAC site and I believe it has some errors IIRC. The year 1984 is missing and I believe the period was reduced for the last couple of years to use up the alphabet before the current system was introduced. So a 2000 car could have different letters depending on when it was registered but the chart seems to show both W and X available for the whole of the year. Some anomalies to be aware of methinks!! :-D
