2008 C4 exclusive electric power steering

Hey from Australia with a 2008 C4 that student son brought a month ago.
Power steering goes very heavy every now and again whilst driving the vehicle, sometimes he can't turn the wheel to get off the road. Issue is I don't live near him and have been trying all over Sydney to get someone to help us, bad timing of the year, I get it! But I seem to have found ( I think ) a pump at a wreckers. I do not know what I'm looking at as I have been sent a photo. Wrecker can't go off the VIN he reckons, anyone here know what would be in the car and whether it matches with the photo. Praying

Without a VIN we won't know what system he has, but I suspect it's not a pump, but electric - I'll no for sure when you provide the VIN. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

The issue they may be having is that there were 2 possibilities on this vehicle for this year - even with a VIN: an electrohydraulic power steering pump of a mechanical version. According to the build sheet he should have the electrohydraulic type of pump. This being the case, the most common fault is a poor vehicle battery as this provides the power directly to operate the system. Secondly the power connections tot he electropump need checking - these can become corroded making poor contact and therefore intermittent issues with the steering.

So check the connections at the pump (pins and sockets) and the wiring for shorts, before the pump itself.

Apparently pump I got is fine, but the steering rack is buggered so they won't fit pump until that's replaced, the joys!
