PureTech 180 - How fast does the engine oil turn black?

Unread post by zakazak »

Hi guys,

I recently got my oil changed but was worried because after just 60km it already smelled a lot like petrol and was also dark black in color.
I did an oil analysis from fresh oil and from my engine and both oils were basically identical - which is a good thing!

How ever, from my second car (which is only driven during the summer) I am used to used oil which looks very much like new (transparent / light brown) at every oil change.
I know that diesel engines will always have black oil but I never heard that from petrol engines.

So I just want to make sure I am not the only one who has very quickly, very dark/black engine oil?

Engine has 40.000km and got the oil changed 5 times so far.

Thanks!

Not sure which vehicle you are talking about (your "second car"), but engine oil must be changed annually as a minimum. You won't have issues with a wet belt as it has a timing chain, but stick to the yearly changes on all PSA vehicles as a minimum and use the correct specification / grade.

I change my oil annually or even sooner. I don't have a wet belt. I do oil analysis with each oil change.

Again: Anyone has experiences / references on how fast the engine oil turns black on a PureTech 180?

I think you will find, oil will start to change colour within the first 1,000 miles, even quicker if there was any of the old oil left in the sump, to slow down the change you will need strip and fully rebuild the engine.
I have no evidence but I would think, if you vacuumed the oil out instead of draining for a few hours there will be more dirty oil remaining.

Also read Mike's post here about these engines:

These engines can be troublesome, they are prone to oil and water leaks due to aging rubber seals and distorting plastic components, and (at least on the Peugeot 308) access to repair anything is difficult to impossible.

This is related to the 1.6 THP but not the PureTech from what I see. I don't see how this is of any relevance to this thread anyway? As I said, I change oil early or even more often.

Although not identical the engines are similar... which is why I linked to it, but your question " How fast does the engine oil turn black?" is not really one that can be answered definitively.

I think I have only had one car where the oil did not go black after starting the engine and that was a 2003 C3 with the 1.4i petrol engine. On this one from memory it stayed amber colour until the next change. Possibly its sump low point allowed most of the old oil to drain out.
