Front side lamps and dip headlamps not working

Help please? Having run Xsara Picassos (1.6hdi) for many years (and still keep one running for work) I recently bought a low mileage 2013 registered (but 'old' shape) C4 Picasso 5 seater 1.6hdi. It's been a good car so far but last night the front side lamps and dip headlamps refused to operate. The switch seems to operate ok and the relevant interior warning lights come on but all four lamps are dead. Rear side lamps, main beam headlamps, day runners and front & rear fogs are all ok. It's obviously not bulb failure and I note similar instances of this problem on this forum so the fault is not unknown however I can't find any solution mentioned?

On these although there are sidelight bulbs in the headlights they are not used; side light function is via the DRLs. My guess is that the dip bulbs have gone; one was out and you didn't notice, and now the other has followed suit!

Thanks Richard......I had no idea that the front side lamps fitted were not intended to work! I'll get to grips with the headlamp bulbs when (if?!) it stops raining!

Neither do plenty of MOT testers - plenty of examples of these being failed for the front side lights 'not working'
