[Diagbox 7.62] Actuator test for radiator fan on C5 X7 with RHF (DW10BTED4)

Unread post by the-termin8r »

Hi all,

I suspect either the bearing on the fan is starting to go or something is caught in the fan somewhere as it made a weird noise when spooling down after I turned the engine off.

I was wondering if there was an actuator test I could run to spool the fan up so that I can investigate further. If there is a test, which ECU should I look under in Diagbox? Would it be in the BSI or somewhere else?

Thanks.
- Rob

Yes, you can put it on/off with the diagbox, i did it once but I'm not sure if it is in the bsi.
Greetings,
Kees.

You'll need to go into Parameters for the engine ECU and look for custom parameters if you can't see a suitable test already Rob. You should be able to find one that will do this. May need a new fan assembly, and in anticipation of a parts request, please see below, however these are no longer available from Citroen :(

(1) Engine Motor Driven Fan, part: 1253R8, £429 at the time when available.

Unfortunately most other alternative aftermarket suppliers like Autodoc and EuroFrance24 don't have any stock either. The only one I found, is dare I say it from 8-[ AliExpress 8-[

Thanks Marc,

Hopefully it's not the assembly, but I might be able to find one from a donor car or scrapyard if it is.

EDIT: It seems to appear under part numbers 1253L6 and 1253T3 as well which seem to have a few Ebay listings. Perhaps not all is lost yet.

Rob, no guarantees....

Those are not the correct parts for this engine. Those are for other engines that have different fan outputs and sizes - so are not listed for this engine with manual 6 speed.
1253L6 and replacement part 1253T3 is listed only for the 3 litre ES9A petrol engine and the DW10BTED4 with Automatic transmission engines only....

1253L6 has a 160W fan and is 415 mm in diameter
1253R8 is 390 mm Diameter - don't have the other specifics

So might be worth a chance, but can't say for sure.

Incidentally the live tests will show changeover from low to high speed fan operation and the starting of the fan assembly low speed on the DCM 3.4 ECU (fitted to your vehicle). These are under the Engine ECU parameter tests.

Had a look under the BSI and engine relay ECUs but couldn't find the actuator tests. Then I found one under injection/ignition, but it didn't seem to do anything. Turns out I didn't even need Diagbox, turning the aircon on was enough to trigger the fan. Anyway, something is definitely up with the fan. It's making a scraping / scratching noise, but it doesn't feel like it's coming from the centre of the fan, more like the outer circumference is rubbing on something in one specific spot which might suggest that it inhaled something recently and it got stuck somewhere. Tried to have a best a look as possible through all available crevices, but couldn't spot anything. I'll probably take it to Chevroncs at some point and see what they make of it.

Ok, yes the A/C will trigger the fan at low speed, but a word of caution - if you suspect there is anything wrong with the fan electrics, don't put your fingers anywhere near the blades as these have the ability to activate with the engine and ignition off.

Sounds likely that a stone or chip may have caused some damage - I would disconnect the battery first then slowly rotate the fan to see if there is a specific area where it is catching.

Good to know, wasn't planning on sticking my fingers in either way. Gave it a bit of a spin with a long screwdriver and there is a bit of resistance, but I can't locate where specifically unfortunately.
