BX TZD Reversing light switch.

Post by tomsheppard »

Mine is kaput. Is there any way of telling whether I need the long or the short one without removing it? The box is a late one with the clutch cable pulling on a lever. Car is 1992/3. The plastic part of the switch is white.
Assuming that this doesn't give the right clues, I'll have to pull the switch out before ordering a new one. Once I have done so, what is the dimension to be measured that determines whether I am holding a short or a long switch?

Tom -
You have the later direct cable attach clutch cable BE3 box, which uses the short switch 95 619 640 (RP 2257 29) as shown in BXpartslist.
PS : the switch rarely fails, try it out with an ohm meter to exclude wiring faults.

Thanks Anders. I shorted the connector and the lights came on so I'm sure it is the switch.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry for this but they had the Maxi in Denmark? 1750 or 1500? Cable or rod gear chance? Bit of a soft spot for the Maxi as my first car. Not sexy but good with girls if you can remember the advertising when new.

All the Maxi variants was available here [:)]
Had 4 of them :
bought one '75red 1750 for project - sold as dirt track car
bought one '74yellow 1750 for spares - angled grinded to bits
bought one '72blue 1500 for project - MOT'ed after some 4months work
traded in our Kadett (Chevette) for a '76green 1750 MOT'ed
Was driving both Maxi's for a period of some 3y's, as we needed 2 cars at the time.
They had exhaust flexible downpipes & front wheel bearings for breakfast [:D][:D]

And lousy gearboxes and engines that drank oil and wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Britain's worst ever car.

Honestly Tom -
They were not THAT bad compared to what else rolling on the roads at the time [;)] :
spacy 4-door, rear hatch, comfy suspension, economic engines, safe on the road.
My Maxi's were not at all that tired, indeed I was more than happy with their pulling.
Had a problem adjusting/servicing the SU-carbs then ? [;)]

Never! I grew up on Minis, Midgets and Landcrabs. Put a maxi next to a Renault 16 and you realise what a rotter it was.

I think the Maxi was a reasonably car.
Very spacious and quite quick in 1750 t/c form.
Clutch was a piece of cake to change.
Seat frame was very weak, would recline automatically by leaning on it.
Door handles found themselves on Lotus doors!!!!!

Must agree with you both. My old Maxi drank oil but nevere seemed to leak any where, the brakes were quit frankly scarey and the old saying throw the anchors out is about right. But in it's defence I did have the 1750cc twin carb with HS6's fitted the same as the TR7. As I said before the gils loved it at the time as it was soooo roomy inside. Went camping with a couple of girls from colledge once never had any complaints. It was only 6 years old when I had it.

We had three in the family as company cars. The first one (1969) went through nine gearboxes in eight months. The second (1970) collapsed its suspension at speed. The third ('71) had a habit of exploding clutches, running on and eventually broke its cam chain at 24,000 miles. Dad threatened to resign, so they gave him a Capri GT with all the toys.
