How to recognize RNEG, SMEG, NAV, RT6, etc

Unread post by Clutchman11 »

Hi all,

Apologies if my question has already been asked and answered as I could find it in my search.

I've become the proud owner of a 2013 Peugeot 508 SW as of last week. Love the car so far, but noticed that the navigation was still using 2014/2015 maps. I've been reading and searching through the forum to figure out exactly what kind of system I have and truthfully I'm only becoming more confused. My center console looks like this:

The unit description gives the following as a version:
RNEG2.20.E5

Going to peugeot.navigation.com and inputting my VIN tells me I have a WIP Nav+ RT6

It is my understanding that the RNEG2 and RT6 are two different systems?

Can I update my system to have the latest maps (according to the peugeot.navigation.com site 2024 maps should be available), but I'm also reading that before I can use those maps I need to update my system. If so, can someone point me in the right direction on how to do that?

Thanks for your help!

You have RT6 but the unit is also referred to as Wipnav+ for Peugeot. The reason you may have had difficulty identifying the unit is because on some vehicles the controls are integrated into the fascia as opposed to being on the head unit itself.

Yes, you can get maps from Peugeot navigation, but you don’t need to update the firmware necessarily. In fact, you can actually have problems when you update the firmware to the latest version which can leave the unit in operable.

So for now, I would just focus on updating the navigation maps and leave the firmware alone if all works well.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the quick reply! Everything seems to be working well so I guess I'll just go for the maps update. Living out in the middle of nowhere is making navigation a pain if the car only sees me off roading the whole time.

I think you’re doing the wise thing and leaving the firmware for the moment. I’ve written tons of posts about this where people have updated their firmware and left their system in an inoperable mode requiring dealer intervention and further, some dealers just aren’t aware of how to fix these When this happens.

Different vehicles have different electrical architectures and there are different versions of the RT6 model. Some firmware updates will go on fine depending on the version you are upgrading from but on other electrical architectures it causes a problem and resets the unit to the factory defaults leaving you unable to configure the language and also leaving many options non-working like parking assistance or the ability to change the language For example.

So the old adage in this case “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” is very apt.

I'm with you on that. I would have left everything alone if it weren't for the fact that I currently have to drive like 15-20 kms before I can start using the navigation system.
