Hi everyone,
The 304 is hideously low geared by modern standards (or any standards!) and our 2nd gear synchro is virtually non-existent, so rather than rebuild the box I was wondering if it might be possible to fit a 5 speed, or even a whole engine/gearbox unit, out of some later model ? It's the 1288 75 bhp petrol engine - I've heard of 106 GTi units being fitted but would rather avoid any electronics.
Any ideas welcome !
Thanks,
Anthony

Re: 304S gearbox upgrade ?
Superaquarama, you have a lovely 70’s classic car, don’t spoil it !!
Doing anything you are thinking of would lead to lots of grief, problems and expense.
Spend your money keeping your Peugeot in perfect original condition. It will then rise in value.

Yes, you certainly have a point, although I wouldn't do anything that wasn't reversible and would keep any old parts with the car. Although it's a high-revving engine, 3000+ rpm at 50 does grate a bit !

Ha Ha.
You should have driven my old 1964 Peugeot 404. It had the old C3 gear box with column change, and it was LHD.
I used to change from 1st to 2nd as soon as it moved forward and it was so noisy.

You can of course double-declutch but even then it doesn't always succeed, although not quite sure why not - had Land Rovers all my driving life so used to doing it.
Anyway, Dean's looking for a synchro hub for me, it's a Cabrio so apparently retains the older gearbox.
