Timing belt cost

Unread post by Philbin »

2013 ds5 2.0lt sport
Just put car in garage for timing belt water pump and auxiliary belt replacing,
Original quote 450 +vat
Phoned me up to say they thought at the time it was a ds3 and my ds5 would take around 3hrs longer to do so the price will be about £600/700 + vat the original quote was not the cheapest or the dearest but seemed reasonable,,
The highest quote I had was £540 +vat, I live rural I told them just to get on with it as it would of caused me problems to collect the car back and book it in somewhere else, question is am I being ripped off,

Consider that the timing kit with original OEM parts including pump is just under £300 from Citroen and the cheaper kit is £160 inc. VAT so whatever the rest is, it will be labour.

I have it as Rate 2, and Time: 3 Hours, which is for a 6 speed manual or automatic or piloted manual, so it depends on your garage's expertise in working with the vehicle - but a proper Dealer would keep to the standard costs for the operation.

So if they don't have the expertise it could take them longer and you end up paying more - whereas a dealer has fixed price servicing, so you know the cost up front - and will be able to book a courtesy car.

It was £780 for our Cactus 1.6 hdi to have its timing belt, water pump, aux belt replaced nearly a year ago at our Citroen dealer so if you are using a dealer to replace your parts then the price might be about right. This included about £465 for labour so maybe about 4 hours, if that.

As i changed recently timing belt on my 2.0 lt 508 on my own and i believe you have the same or close DW10 series engine, you have to consider for extra charges cause of faulty spares at this age of the car, such as upper engine mount (around 40€ Febi brand in my case, surely more expensive PSA original) or seals in crankshaft and camshaft.
It isn't an easy job in this engine, as you have to undo engine mount and support the engine, many plastic covers, drain coolant, maybe to take out starter to lock the flywheel with pin for TDC e.t.c
In my area it was around 800-900€ final price, if they were knowing what they were doing, as my engine edition is not popular in my country.Maybe in Ford Mondeo taxies. Also ask for the water pump, as the oringinal ones are known to fail with the plastic impeller.

OK so final bill was £600 included timing belt kit + water pump and auxiliary belt + antifreeze ect, and a full day labour,
Phoned local citroen dealer in Chester quoted £578 for timing belt and water pump they also said they would need the car for a full day due to the difficulty of the job,
So at the end of the day I'm happy with the outcome and it's peace of mind
