PSA interface update error

I tried to update the PSA interface firmware from a list of PSA interfaces I found on the folder where diagbox was initially installed.

After the program was running the installation was interrupted.

I installed the firmware again but when I try to use diagbox, I get this error

“update issue the communication interface software cannot be updated if the problem persists contact the hotline”

I tried to install a different interface but the problem persists.


Does anyone know what could be the issue here ?

It may not update if it's not a full chip kit - or you may have USB / cable / connector / Pin issues, but you shouldn't need to manually update it - the system will decide if it needs newer firmware or not and update itself if required. Some firmware updates can cause issues on older cars, hence the need to downgrade occasionally.

Any idea on how to reverse this?
I am struggling to understand how this works
Is it laptop side that gets updated or the PSA module connected to the car ?

It's the VCI (Vehicle Communications Interface) which the firmware internally updates, not the software on the laptop.

You can downgrade the firmware by using the PSA Interface checker and selecting a lower version of the firmware from the same folder source if needed.

I tried to downgrade the firmware initially, diagbox was showing message “the usb cable shouldn’t be disconnected until update has finished” after which the laptop turned off (buttery drained), then when I turned it on I started getting the error message I mentioned above.
Could it be that the VCI needs resetting now or something ? I am a bit concerned to be honest

First thing is NEVER to run a laptop on battery only when undertaking diagnostics or more importantly any updates - especially if it is old or on low power for exactly this reason. It may have bricked the interface.

The only possibility is that because these can be downgraded and upgraded with regard to the firmware, there may be the possibility of re-installing it.

I suspect your battery cut power to the USBs and therefore during the firmware update.....

All I can suggest is that you get it on the mains indoors and restart the laptop - then try again.

Yeah I shouldn’t have updated it without the laptop connected to main.
You mentioned that diagbox does updates automatically.
Do you know where in diagbox I can get it to carry an update?

It's an entirely automatic process. When the Diagbox software is updated, it usually will update the firmware at the same time if it is required. This is specifically for later vehicle additions and for compatibility with newer equipment and systems, so not always needed for older cars. So depending on the age of the vehicle, (if you are generally only dealing with those you own), it will stick on the firmware required for the particular version of Diagbox being used.

Most of those updates in the folder are likely for the Diagbox Version 7.** versions. Some owners had issues with later firmware used for diagnosing a later vehicle - as when they went back to diagnosing an older vehicle there could be connection or communication problems, so that's why you could downgrade the firmware back if necessary.
