DS3 1.6 Blue HDI - white smoke, smell of ammonia

Unread post by FrankMac »

Hello,

I wonder if anyone has had the problem I currently have. I have a DS3 2016 1.6 Blue HDI. Last week when driving huge amounts of white smoke started bellowing out of the exhaust. I pulled up and it reeked of ammonia. Breakdown recovery guy advised he has seen similar problems with older Adblue HDI models. I had my car towed to a garage I use and I said we think there is an Adblue problem. The garage said they do not touch Adblue problems.
I've booked my car in at Citroen for it to be looked at but I need to get it 15 miles there. I am not sure if my car is safe to drive or not.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so what was the problem and was it costly to repair?
Thanks for any advice.

Welcome along.

Sounds like the ad blue injector is stuck open. Cheaper than replacing the tank, but not cheap - I think the injector is over £300...

Is worth to try and dismantle injector and put into the jar of boiling water. Keep it for some time, replace water twice or so. Problem with AdBlue - crystals building up. Boiling water should dissolve crystals and injector might work properly. I am using AdBlue additive to avoid building up crystals in whole urea system.

At first I would check the water (antifreeze) reservoir for oil leaks inside for any case...
There is a possibility of turning off the add blue system by software, and to solve the problem once forever. This job can be done by guys who doind elecrtonics, sofware (chip) tuning. In my countru many people are doing this for about 150 to 250 euros.

That is illegal here and we would never advise anyone to do that.
