Gearbox oil confusion for Ma5 manual transmission

Pulling my hair out a bit here. Haynes lists preferred as PSA b71 2316 sae 75w (1.9-2l) as I'm looking to do a gearbox refresh .

But searching that b71 2316 finds very little oil to purchase and most listings that look correct like total traxium gear 8/9 show b71 2330 on the label and I cannot find a picture of the gear oil showing 2316 anywhere


I can find sources for the alternative gearbox oil but I really would like to use the preferred spec.


Can anyone help me please ? I can post vin if needed

Might help if I add 2017 Citroen c3 (production date may 2027) with a 1.2 naturally aspirated eb2f engine and 5 speed manual.

If anyone can let me know what the absolute best gearbox oil is to use I would appreciate it

I have found total traxium Fe gear 9 sae75w which is listed as b71 2316 on the label but it's not in stock anywhere other than 200l drums and I think that's overkill

Ravenol MTF-3 meets that spec and is quite readily available.

"absolute best"? Fools errand there, all you'll get is a list of people that have used oil X and the gearbox hasn't exploded,

Nice one I appreciate your help ! Traxium gear 9 I was looking for to order domestically I'm exploring the alternatives provided again thanks for taking the time to send that to me.


And absolute best I really should have worded that differently. Maybe ' suggested premium gear oil that meets the spec of PSA b71 2316"


I have found over the last couple of years since owning a car oil is not as simple as most think.


Viscosity numbers are way less important than specification .

Anyway time to pull myself out of this gear oil learning rabbit hole and just do the damn fluid swap

Any of the 3 there will do you fine. The Millers seems pretty available, Total stuff never seems that common.

Manufacturer's specs are a funny thing, often you'll find the same actual oil matches eleventy manufacturer's specs, because the manufacturers like to have their own specification code for a fairly standard thing - and in some cases, charge oil manufacturers for the right to use that specification on their bottle.

PSA B71 2315
API GL-4 level, SAE 75W80 viscosity gear oil made of API Group III base oils.

API GL4 = equivalent to a US miliitary spec MIL-L-2105B. Mostly about things like the substance behaviour, chemical composition, storage stability etc., and references a whole load of other standards.
SAE 75W80 = Defined in SAE J306 for viscosity at temperature.
API Group 3 = Defined in API1509 as a quality\refinement standard.

All industry-standard specs. In this case, all PSA have done is created their own code.
