Well I thought it was about time to start recording any developing issues on Sylv's car and start a blog. May as well start as we mean to go on!
What fun it is turning out to be...
Basically did the timing belt and auxiliary the other week including full coolant drain, major service and replaced the fan resistor module with genuine. All good. Money well spent.
Some of you may have picked up on the fact that I even changed the rear nearside shock gaiter because it had split. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
Yes! Well. I fixed it and it's broke again...
How? I've no idea but I'll give some pointers and ask if anyone else with any car has experienced the same issue. Before I replaced it, the car was making a slight noise going over speed bumps. This became worse after I replaced the gaiter.
The nearside shock was replaced some years ago according to the invoices. I wondered if it was replaced with genuine. It's Bilstein so maybe it is. The shock has a white collar where the piston meets the main shock body. Upon rechecking the tightness of the bolts over this weekend, I noticed that the gaiter was split again and that the white collar had substantial vertical scratches in its VERY tough plastic so it is like the base of the gaiter is being gripped SO tight that it has ripped the gaiter in half again.
Genuine gaiter, bilstein shocker! What gives?
Photo doesn't show the actual split gaiter because I decided to duct tape it together and guess what? Duct tape is indestructible and provides a stronger, mechanical grip than the plastic itself and has ended up pulling the whole gaiter down the shocker! What a shocker that was..
The piston is in impeccable condition under the gaiter so no issues with leaks on the shocker.
Anyway, that's a minor irritation at the moment.
So Sylv drives home the other day and presents me with a recording of the car knocking.
Now, last weekend, I changed the brake fluid which doesn't seem to have been changed for 7 years. I hate coincidences when you service something and then something else manifests.
It's hard to describe but I am wondering if it has anything to do with the parking brake and having let brake fluid drip out of the nipple and down the caliper. A bit random I know.
So:-
1) Knocking does not occur on full lock.
2) It is worse when pulling away from a standstill.
3) Road surface appears to have no effect on it.
4) It happens when the car is going along in first and second (and possibly in other gears at higher speeds but it's not obvious if it does).
5) It doesn't necessarily happen when the steering is being moved but you can feel it through the steering column.
6) It is irregular in rhythm.
7) It is does not increase in frequency at different speeds.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be from the above description? Feel free to ask questions.
I've checked the engine mount from doing the timing belt. I've checked to make sure I've left nothing under the bonnet.
