Fischer boilers anyone?

Unread post by Gibbo2286 »

My gas central heating boiler is 13 years old and gave me some grief at Christmas a couple of years ago, so I've been thinking of a replacement,.
Answered an internet advert for Fischer electric combi boilers this morning, they are very reluctant to answer questions about price until an agent has visited and 'assessed'.
Anyone on here have experience of the company? I've booked a visit from their man for Monday.

Only anecdotal but I have heard that they are good but overpriced.

I got a Baxi with a ten year warranty three, or perhaps four, years ago.
Decent price and has been no bother whatsoever.

No personal knowledge Gibbo but there are many reviews on the Trustpilot site here. :-D

The reviews are for the company, which seem to be generally positive. Reviews for the electric boilers are in the general reviews somewhere so will need to be weeded out.

No idea about the company but;
The boiler obviously uses on peak electricity which, even allowing for the relative efficiencies of gas v electricity will cost a lot more per unit energy than gas to run. If your house is well insulated with a low heat loss then this annual difference may be tolerable. Check your old boilers output to house heating, decide how often it runs on/off on it's thermostat & do your own calcs. Gas v Electricity costs are readily available.
The online bumph for the boiler uses lots of emotive words to convince Joe Public that the thing is very efficient but you can't get away from the basic fact that if your house needs X kw to heat it at any given time it'll consume that no matter how many gizmos the boiler has.
Probably a good product if you're not bothered about running costs but....
Do challenge the man who calls about running costs & see if he gives an honest answer.

The last house I had was all electric so I know how the price differs from gas but now with solar panels and battery storage already installed here I think maybe going for an electric boiler here may be less of a difference in cost, I'll have to do the sums.
Thanks for the comments.

Neil mentioned Octopus a while back that had some interesting solutions including heat pumps, may be worth comparing.

My present house, almost totally rebuilt from a wreck, 20 years ago, had a log burner plus 'old school' air/air heat pump in the kitchen/day room & electric radiators plus log burner for heating the lounge & bedrooms. There's no town gas here & I was never convinced it would be worth the effort & cost to install 'wet' oil fired central heating.
The heat pump was replaced by a modern 4kw output/ 800w input inverter unit about 8 years ago & has performed so well I've just had 2 more air/air units installed in the 50 m2 lounge & attic 'apartment'.
The house is relatively well insulated with the single story 40m2 kitchen costing about 1€/ 10 hour day to heat last year.
Lots of adverse publicity about heat pumps which I can understand with badly designed air/water units replacing boilers but my air/air units perform perfectly with very low noise levels & the bonus of cooling during the very hot spells we now experience.
Just thought I'd mention that for anyone considering this type of heating.

I looked at the air pump option but the prices are well out of my budget.
I'm with Octopus for dual fuel.

I've just paid about £6,000 for supply & fit of two Mitsubishi air/air units with very smart indoor consul heat emitters.

Well I spent a pleasant enough hour this morning with the lady rep from Fischer, she did all the necessary measurements and calculations, conclusion, they will supply and install their boiler etc. for twelve grand, discounted to ten and a bit if I let them choose the installation date. Fifty percent deposit today if I want to go ahead.
Don't think that's a runner.

Have you delved into the break-even costs/calculations, or is it just not worth bothering at that price ?
Even with 'free' electricity, that would seem quite a premium over gas etc.

Doing that now bobins,
She kept telling me "It's expensive but it will last a lifetime." I said "Well for me that's not much of an advantage seeing as I'm 89 years old." :)
