Peugeot Partner 1.9d 2001 speedo reading high and odometer
Hi all,
Please can anyone help me in my present problem with my Dad's Partner van. Bought it a few months back and it's in good nick and my Dad is well chuffed with it. Doesn't rush about just pottering in the van. I took for a spin the other day and noticed I was doing 50mph in no time in 4th gear low revs. Went through a 'your speed' sign and the speedo is reading 50mph and the speed is actually 30mph??
Not just that but Dad did about 8 miles in it to town but read about 19 miles. Could this be a speed sensor gone bad?
Any help be appreciated thank you in advance
Danny

You don't say what country you're in or where the van was bought from but my first thought is that you're actually viewing the speeds and distance in km rather than miles.

Hi Paul,
I'm in England mate and it's definitely the mph I'm reading. The speedo needle doesn't jump it's nice and smooth, it's just like it's getting a false reading and thinks it's going faster and therefore travelling a longer distance than it actually is. Is there a speed sensor on these? Does it sound like a possible sensor issue? Thanks

Generally speaking there's no separate speed sensor nowadays as the speed info is gained from the ABS sensors on each wheel. Unless your van doesn't have ABS?

I suspect a 1.9D 2001 won't be as advanced.
Let's have the VIN and I'll see what's what. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

Check your settings: https://www.completecar.ie/askusanythin ... %20to%20km.
Your vehicle is older so may not have it as a user-configurable option, but there should be a setting available in Diagbox which could have been set wrongly.

Ok, so as I thought this vehicle is a 2001 1.9 DW8B, and doesn't have ABS or ESP, yet alone a touchscreen!
So it's likely the speed sensor needs replacing if the actual speedometer is working correctly - in the sense that it's rising and falling properly and not randomly dropping back to zero or all over the place.
On a 306 it's here - so should be in a similar position:

Looks like this:
Be advised you'll get some oil coming out when removing and replacing.

If it has been like this for ages what you might think is a high mileage van could be a low mileage van. You can check its MOT history mileage on a gov site https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
As a rough guide if you have a rev counter, per thousand rpm first is about 5 mph, second about 10 mph, third about 15 mph, fourth about 20 mph, fifth about 25 mph. So at 50 mph in fourth would be around 2500 rpm but 30 mph about 1500 rpm.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies.
Marc,
Is that the part number I need as in the photo mate? You are correct in thinking the speedometer works fine it does just that, no dropping or bouncing, (like my Grandad's old C15 van!!), it smooth albeit 20mph out of synch.
PaulC5
Yes mate have checked mot history and all seems OK on 97000 at the moment.Bought it as no rot and original sills still solid and stone chip paint still intact! It maybe over mileage a bit but not a clue how much
Thanks for all your help so far

Yes, you're lucky that the picture I included just so happened to show the correct part number....

I can't see it being anything else Danny, because if it was the speedo itself, I would expect that to show erratic behaviour. Let us know how it goes.
