306 running rough

i am having major problems with my 1.4 97 306 {new shape}
the engine seemed to be firing only on 3 cylinders although all plugs are sparking.there is alot of spitting back through the air intake box, with clouds of brown smoke out of the exhaust.
i purchased and fitted a new crank censor but no different.
the engine management light was lit {only when engine stationary} so i got a mate to read out the codes from the ecu, it came back with idle circuit fault.
can anybody point me in the right direction.
