Had this noise from my van since I bought it over 2 years ago and I'm sure it's getting worse - no garage can find the source of the noise but I keep being reassured it's not the chain. I'm still a bit worried it is, and with a 3 month trip to Spain on the horizon I don't want to be stranded. Any thoughts?

Try the test with an A4 sheet of paper above the oil port, with oil filling cap removed from the engine. If the paper is sprinkled all over with oil within seconds, then you have a bad chain tensioner. I've found this test on Youtube and i found it verry concludent.
Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it!
