I've got an oil leak. Mechanic originally thought it was coming from the oil cooler, however it was dry around that area when they went to replace the gasket. Theyre struggling to find the source and have suggested I get the engine pressure tested with smoke.
Is there any common areas these engine leak. Any easy fixes?

Injector seals is a common place. Oil can pool here, run down and cause smoke from the hot engine.

Re: 1.6 hdi oil leak - where is it coming from?
I don't know about the injector seals as on the 8V engines they just seal against combustion gasses. Oil would have to come from somewhere else in order to run down there.
I was told that two common places for an oil leak (in fact I think that our 308 suffers the same problem) is from the oil seal on the camshaft and/or the seal from the cam carrier to the cylinder head. I don't know if there's a separate cam cover plate but tat would be another source.

I have noticed our Cactus 1.6 hdi has a slight oil leak where the cam carrier joins the head at the front but it is not enough to run down the engine.

Valve Cover Gasket
This is the most common leak point in the 1.6 HDI engine, and also the easiest to misdiagnose.
Symptom: The valve cover is located at the top of the engine. If its rubber gasket hardens due to aging, engine oil will seep out and flow down the engine block.
Why it's hard to detect: Leaked oil often accumulates near the oil cooler, turbocharger, or timing belt cover, making it appear as if these parts are leaking, but the source is actually at the top.
Solution: Check around the valve cover for oil seepage. If present, replacing the valve cover gasket is a relatively inexpensive and simple repair (materials typically cost only a few tens of euros/dollars).
Turbocharger Inlet/Outlet Pipes
6 HDI operates at very high temperatures, and the rubber hoses connecting to the turbocharger are prone to aging and cracking. Symptoms: Oil Leakage: The oil leak is usually located on the lower side of the engine and often accompanied by a burnt smell (because oil is dripping onto the hot exhaust pipe).
Solution: Check the hoses near the turbocharger. If the hoses are worn, replace the corresponding oil pipe seals or hoses.
Crankshaft Seal:
Symptoms: Located at the bottom of the engine (where the oil pan and cylinder block connect) or at the transmission connection. If this leaks, oil will drip directly onto the ground.
Solution: Replace the seal, but this usually requires removing the transmission or engine, which is expensive in terms of labor.
Oil Pressure Sensor:
Symptoms: This is a very small component screwed onto the cylinder block. If the seal is faulty, oil will continuously leak.
Solution: Extremely cheap and easy to replace, usually taking only a few minutes.
