Hi, I’m new here. Had my DS5 for a few months now, previously owning 3 other Citroëns. A 2005 C5 Exclusive, C4 2008 16V SX, C4 2016 Flair BlueTec HDI.
My car has 235/40/19 tyres. I find the ride very hard.
Does anybody know if it is possible to fit 245/40/19 or even 255/40/19? to get a taller sidewall and a more comfortable ride.
I appreciate that there will be a small speedometer error. Is this the only problem I may encounter?
Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong section.
Thanks
Andy

The DS5 was notable for it's poor ride - mainly down to the suspension, but having low profile tyres will only add to the poor ride quality.
It's my understanding that as long as you are within 3% of the diameter (height) of the originals - assuming these are factory specs.
The differences for 245/40/19 would be under tyre 2:

and for 255/40/19:
But I would check with a tyre expert before ordering on this basis to be sure.
Also you may possibly get an ESP error if the speed measurements are out of tolerance.

I believe Marc is right with the 3%. I've seen it before.
I reference this. https://tiresize.com/comparison/
One further consideration is if the tyres protrude outside the wings it's actually illegal.
One other option you perhaps haven't though of is 225/45/19. These are the same 2.3% increase as with 255/40/19 but will certainly be legal and the tyres will be cheaper too. I'd expect they'd fit the rims but check it all with an expert whatever decision you make.
225 vs 255 are about 10%.or so cheaper, will have less rolling resistance so higher mpg... But less grip.

Re: Alternative tyre sizes for DS5 19"wheels
Hi.
Thanks for the quick responses.
I had a nagging doubt at the back of my mind about the ESP/Traction Control.. Why do modern cars have to be so complicated?
I had thought about going narrower, it is a sound practical solution, but I do like the wider tyre look. I don't think 255s would protude, nor impinge on the base of the front coil spring cup according to my tape measure, but the 245s were my favourite option and they certainly wouldn't, and for some strange reason they are always cheaper, though that's not the primary consideration. My local tyre shop says they're fitted to a lot of Jags and there's loads of them around.
I have to say that this car pulls my caravan admirably, it has more power than my previous car and is more stiffly sprung. Do either of you have any opinion regarding ECU remapping the DW10? I have considered it recently. My previous C4 (DV6C) was remapped, great to drive at up to 90% full power but suffered from low fuel pressure occasionally. I got fed up changing fuel filters every year.
I think I'm going to give up on this project for the time being. I need new tyres at 21K, so will go with the original size. The Toyo Proxes XX currently fitted are close to the wear indicators. I'll pick this up next time. But sincere thanks for the informed input.

Do you have a Citroen or DS DS5? I find the ride in my DS one firm but reasonable with the standard tyres on 19" wheels. I slow down to 30mph for a level crossing, but otherwise pretty comfortable.
But I did read that the Citroen-badged pre-facelift ones had a pretty wooden ride quality.

GREAT tyres (I use them on my ACtiva) with fantastic grip but Toyo do not last long.
I do not think such a small increase in tyre wall size will make much difference.....dropping wheel size 17's would be a better choice to achieve more "comfort"

What are the perceived advantages of bigger wheels?

Re: Alternative tyre sizes for DS5 19"wheels
I think this about sums it up:
Pros of 19 Inch Wheels | Cons of 19 Inch Wheels |
Improved Handling | Increased Tire Cost |
Better Aesthetics | Ride Comfort Compromise |
Quieter Ride | Potential Speedometer Discrepancy |
More Responsive Steering | Impact on Fuel Efficiency |
Wider Tire Selection | Faster Tire Wear |
Enhanced Road Holding | Harsher Ride |
Improved Brake Clearance | More Vulnerable to Potholes |
Increased Resale Value | Easier to Scuff on Kerbs |
Better Heat Dissipation | Performance in Wet Conditions |
Enhanced Vehicle Dynamics | Increased Suspension Wear |

Re: Alternative tyre sizes for DS5 19"wheels
Good table above by GMAB but one thing questionable. Cons - Easier to scuff on kerbs.
Kerb scuffing from my experience is just how much of a lip the tyre has over the rims. If you have far wider tyres than the rims, it protects them, if they are "flush" it doesnt.
Just done the sums on my car and old. The fiat 500x was bad for this 7J rims (7 inch wide) and 215 tyres, not flush but not far off. Now I have 8J rims and 235 tyres and theres a lip, I don't think i have even a minor scuff yet.
I remember a neighbour of mine had a Skoda Karoq sportline version or similar a few yrs ago, wide rims and flush tyres. The wheels looked wrecked, absolutely awful in about 3 months; no kerb protection. 8J rims and 225 tyres.
Next time you walk down a road and theres parked cars just look at the rims/ tyres, you'll see what I mean.

Hi, It's a DS DS5. I'd heard the same as you re. the Citroen version too. It does seem quite stiffly sprung though, I don't think the XL tyres help either. I suppose the upside is that it does feel very planted and surefooted.NotAnInterestingName wrote: ↑16 Sep 2024, 13:06 Do you have a Citroen or DS DS5?
