Citroen relay overheating fault fix gauge max then shudder

Hi, hope this helps. Mines a 2017 that says it's overheating, dash turns into a Christmas tree, engine shudders then drives normally, occasionally it shuts down and won't restart, occasionally it cuts out at speed then will restart. The fault gets worse with time until it's not safe to drive and smart motorways are a terrifying thought. Occasionally warns of hill assent fault. Searched the forums that say water pump.. drivers mirror, thermostat housing.. etc. logically it seems that fitting a new thermostat housing will sort it but it's not easy not cheap and in my opinion not the problem cos I made that mistake. You could get the main dealers or local garage to fire the parts cannot it but the issue doesn't throw up a fault code so you're likely to pay for parts and labour in excess of 1k and still have the issue. When you take it back they probably won't fit your old parts back cos the scrap man has taken them and "they were faulty anyway.. (good garages are out there)
Ok.. let's attempt to diagnose the fault. Start engine, lift bonnet, switch on AC, wait 30 seconds.. the radiator cooling fan at passenger side should kick in. If it doesn't then switch off the engine, make sure it's cold so it doesn't start with your hands in it, lean down and spin the fan, compared how it feels with the other one. They are identical and should feel and sound the same, if it's notchy and loose then test it with a 12v feed or with a test meter on (buzz). Easy to compare with the other fan.. yep... You've probably found the issue. £120 on eBay for new fan assembly then youtube how to replace it. Takes about an hour and requires basic tools. Your probably thinking you should spend £500 on the dealer part but it was a dealer part that failed you. This fix is for when the vehicle says it's overheating but isn't. If yours is genuinely overheating then this may not be the issue. Hope this helps you as my hair has fallen out finding the fix.. SAM.

Just be aware that if there are issues with the cooling system, there's the likelihood of the engine fan kicking in without the engine running!

Before you stick your hands anywhere near the fan, you should disconnect the battery negative terminal first.
