Squeaky clutch when hot

Unread post by CGlen »

Hi, over the past couple of months my clutch has become extremely squeaky. It only seems to do it when the weather is hot or when it's warmed up after driving for 10 minutes. It's noisy when the clutch is pressed and released slowly. Sounds more like a creaking. I've had two garages check and both say it's working fine and just squeaky (one said possible bearing) and a third place said possibly pivot and new clutch kit required. I'm not sure what to do. Clutches are £800 for this car so don't want to do it if I don't have to. Cheers.

If not already done, check if the noise is coming from the pedal area. On our C5 it has squeaked when the pedal has been pressed and it was the pedal spring rubbing against the bracket. A smear of grease on the spring and bracket stopped it. If it is from the bearing, a light touch on the pedal might test if it stops.

Yes, usually the pedal spring - I had the same on my X7.

The noise isn't coming from the pedal unfortunately. It's noisy inside and outside the car, but would say it's louder outside in the engine bay area.

How many miles has it done, what year and engine does the DS3 have ? If the clutch is not worn out and slipping or proving difficult to use the pedal, I would be tempted to just live with the noise since it could be many years before anything needs doing. To do anything else would mean removing the gear box and whilst off you might as well fit a new clutch.

It's a 2016 plate, 65k miles, 1.2 petrol. Yes, that's what I'm thinking. It's not slipping, gear changes are fine etc. The only thing I notice is that the pedal gets slightly heavier when hot (and noisy). Had a couple of garages actually test it and both have said it is working as it should but if I can't bear the noise then they can replace the whole clutch but no guarantee this would stop the noise, which seems weird. Issue is, I'm trying to sell the car, but not sure whether to just get it done or not.

I've had a few cars inc the C5 where the clutch pedal gets harder when the engine is hot and not done anything about it.

Yeah, guess I'll just leave it. Not too concerned about the heavy clutch, just the noise that is annoying. Got someone coming to view the car this week, so guess they'll either want it with a squeaky clutch or they won't.
