citroen c 5 2006 a/c

Unread post by adiopeto »

Hello to everyone , i have a common issue but i still need your help. my parents got a c5 back in 2010 or 2011 second hand. For most of the life span of the car we did not have ac, and many times they tried fixing it , it worked for a couple of months and die again. recently i got my license and they gave me the rights to the car. as we are all aware it is summer and it is a hot one at that. so i am searching if there is a way to fix it whiteout braking the bank and trashing the car(technically not yet 100%mine). so my dad says that the compressor is at fault , it is the original one that the car came whit out the factory and it is just old and worn down. i checked online and saw that they are 500 to 800 usd so this is out of the question. what other things can i check to make shure that it is not necessary the compressor. i am willing to provide more info if needed and will really appreciate the help. sorry for the poor English too.

90% of A/C failures are caused by leaks.
The A/C system is charged with a small amount of oil, to lubricate the compressor. When you get a leak in the system some of the oil may come out with the refrigerant. Typically, dirt then sticks to the oil.
So the first thing to do is to go over every inch of the A/C system looking for these oily patches.
Check the connections between components, check behind the compressor pulley, check the fins of the condenser (the 'radiator' like thing at the front). Some condensers can develop cracks or be damaged by stones.
Look for oily, dirty, wet spots on the A/C components.
Failing that, the next thing is to pressurize the system and go over it with a mixture of soapy water and look for bubbles.
If the system runs cold "for a short while" after being charged, then there is nothing wrong with the system, it will be a leak.
If the system is correctly charged but produces no cold air...then there is a mechanical or electronic problem.
