C5 alternator pulley type

Unread post by dulenator »

Hi all!

I've been busy with the various parts going bad and the newest one is kind of "gurgling" noise from the engine bay.
I suspect it has something to do with the alternator since the noise is gone when the belt is removed. I've changed the tensioner since the old one was a bit loose and the AC compressor pulley spins nice.

Finally, =D> the question is, what type of pulley does my C5 have - fixed or overrunning, or whatever it is called, type?
This one feels fixed and maybe that's the issue, or some bearing is going bad.

VIN, if needed: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

PSA don't specify and the pulley is not available from them separately unfortunately. It should be either a Valeo or Mitsubishi unit - if you can get the part no off it, the maker might be able to tell you if it's fixed or overrun.

Just replaced mine 3 days ago (C5 X7 2.0HDI RHF) . The engine now operates much smoother, even the acceleration is slightly better from low rpm. Of course there are no more scary noises :)

First and the most important: do not order/buy it just by VIN/engine! I made this mistake and guess what - I received a wrong one. According to the description it was suitable for my RHF engine and many others, but unfortunately the inside cone was not the same. There are different versions of the alternator...

Here's what you should do. Remove the plastic cap that covers the pulley and you will see the part number. It looks like this:

Having the number, you can buy/order it without worrying. (as Richard mentioned: aftermarket only)

Removal: You will need a special tool and impact wrench.
Off topic: Check the brushes, just in case :)

Thank you for the quick replies! \:D/
It seems that the best thing to do is to pull out the alternator and go for a full check. I know an excellent shop that does alternator repair/renewal, so I'll take that to them. I just need to take it off. :)
