2006 2lr C5 Banging

Unread post by boristhespie »

Hi

Hoping its not what I think it is but my 2006 C5 Exclusive has developed a clatter over bumps. it sounds as if the exhaust is loose and banging against body but its not the exhaust and it is on the other side. It seems further back than wheel, however I have put it into the garage and they say they can't find anything but can hear the noise when driving. It is quite loud. It happened usually on compressions as opposed to normal bumps. I am concerned this "can't find it" is really a "We don't want to start hauling this apart" largely because things are old and rusty in places and as they said once you start unplugging things and so on. Eg the anti rollbar bolts look done.

Can you advise, I have an idea but want to hear what you think it may be.

Okay, Went back to garage. They can't find anything wrong with it. they have tried moving bushings, tried to see if there is play in anything, they found nothing. They took it for a drive and can hear the noise. the advice is that until it become more prevalent to keep driving the car. They have no concerns about safety but don't want to haul things apart as the car is old and bits are rusted etc. (Can of worms scenario) but to go back if things change and get worse. I trust the garage wholeheartedly, however I also know if I do drive it, it can only make the problem worse. I drove it to work this morning and it banged a couple of times going out of town but was fine after and felt good.

What I was thinking was a rear trailing arm bearing. I had one of these go on a previous C5 in 2009. It was a nightmare to find someone to replace it. But that was a distinct low clunk. This seems a bit different. Like I said it sounded like a loose exhaust. Yes there is a clunk but its more high pitched. not tinny but going that way. it is seems further back than the trailing arm bearing (But that's my impression from the driver's seat) and less "solid". I have checked the boot for loose stuff. I think the garage will have checks for loose stuff under neath as they had it up on ramps looking at it. Extending the suspension up and down to see it it was something inside that, which they say it could be but until it become more obvious they don't want to make a start on what could be an expensive job.

Car is 2ltr diesel on 165K.

AS well as thoughts on the above, can I ask if anyone knows of an Indy Citroen Specialist near to Dundee. All the Citroen peeps seems to have disappeared.
