C4 2023 does not update

Unread post by elonMusk »

??,
Does anyone of you know how to get the latest update for the current Citroen c4 please?

My car still has an old firmware version and doesn't find any update. I know that there is an update cause others have it already since months. My Citroen dealer told me it will maybe come later this year...
The problem with the old firmware is that the HUD does not work properly and sometimes all the displays turn off... for my friends car it was all fixed with the OTA update.

Does anyone know how to force the update?

My friend has the same setup as me: same car with same options. Same iPhone with hotspot...
If anyone knows, please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

I can't help you with an update for this vehicle as these are as you say, updated via OTA.

There may be a reason why an update is NOT showing and that is because a recent update caused major issues that resulted in a lot of head unit malfunctions and restarts, and loss of options. Only then did the dealers get specific manual updates to resolve this. So I would wait until you are informed there is one.

If your system is not functioning correctly, you must inform your dealer, as this will be a warranty issue. If it's not working this is your first step.

Hi Marc,

thank you for your quick reply!
So that means either I wait for the update to come at some time or I should see my dealer again to do the update on their site?
Unfortunately the problem happens more often and also while driving on the highway.
Disconnecting the battery fixes the issue temporarily…

I’ll post and update here soon…

Yes, take it back to the dealer as they will need to record the incident for network feedback.

For an OTA update to take place, you will need to have WiFi on board (if you have the VIN I can check this first - Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff). Secondly, the vehicle has to be in a place that has good reception. The updates are very large - especially maps, so can take a while to come through.

I'm Interested in this thread as my 1 week old C4 has been prompting me to download and update the Infotainment system (firmware presumably) at the end of every journey. (Didn't explain what the update related to on the display).
Finally plucked up enough courage to proceed with the update. It downloaded and installed succesfully taking more than the 1 minute it proposed...... Several minutes in total actually....so guess it was a small firmware update.
Next morning on entry into the car the displays were completely blank. No Citroen logo or welcome and nothing at all on the HUD or Dash display. Interestingly the radio was on and couldn't be stopped or muted from the display rotary control and the main display was very dimmed and unreadable in daylight.
Wasn't sure what to do for the best, so left car and phoned my dealer. Whilst waiting for a return call I went back to car and was surprised to find everything apparently back to normal. All displays working as if nothing had happened.
I guess it was configuring the previous day's installation, and I can only conclude that I had either left the car to early following download/installation or whilst it was configuring, seeing as I couldn't see the very dimmed display.
Anyway all seems normal, but it did give me a moment of panic initially. Informed the dealer that all was apparently O.K.
No doubt I'll be keeping a close eye on everything from now on.
Sorry for the long post but hope it may prove of use somehow.

Updates on these will guaranteed take more than a few minutes Geoff, They are usually Gigabytes in size, with the maps being upwards of 11Gb.

So the system may collect parts of the update (s) whilst out driving and when it has the complete data set may undertake the installation at some point.

I gather that the actual full installation would be completed with the engine off and also the ignition off ?
This would presumably need to complete before the car enters econ mode to preserve battery charge levels, or am I misunderstanding the actual process ?
My handbook doesn't really explain this in any detail which is unfortunate. I like to know these sort of details which seem to be lacking these days.

Put it this way, for vehicles without OTA updates, we have to use a USB to update firmware and maps, and it is essential to keep the engine running throughout, to prevent exactly this from happening.

My feelings are that with OTA updates the updates may be stored and compiled internally and installed at an opportune moment when there is sufficient electrical charge in the battery. This is something you will have to confirm with your dealer though, as it's relatively new and info on the exact methods are lacking at present.

Hi guys,

The VIN is VR7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
My car has WiFi built in. It is interesting that as soon as it is connected with my hotspot on my phone it starts downloading the maps (I can see it when I check the maps on the navigation menu) my iPhone says it consumed like more than 50GB on one day… fortunately I have an unlimited data plan…

Ok, so just to clarify, you don't have built-in WiFi on your vehicle according to your VIN, so this is using your smartphone's connection to connect and update.

Hi Marc,
That is interesting because it is possible to activate WiFi for connecting with external WiFi networks directly from the car. I’m a bit confused now.

Hi all.
That's an interesting point regarding built in WiFi as my Factory Build Sheet specifies (under Interior Fittings section), WIFI - WITHOUT WIFI.

The C4 handbook (ref page 247 - My Citroen Drive Plus) states:

"The system can notify the receipt of an update when it is connected to an exterior Wi-Fi network or a mobile telephone network".
"Large updates are downloaded only via the Wi-Fi network".

What isn't clarified in the handbook is if the above mandatory Wi-Fi network requirement relates to large mapping updates only, and / or any system firmware/software updates irrespective of size.

It's all a bit vague to me.

Also the terminology can often mean different things in different situations.

It may be that in this case, it's referring to the vehicle being able to act as a WiFi Hotspot for passenger devices. So you would share your smartphone WiFi with the vehicle via a secure connection and then this becomes a WiFi Hotspot broadcast by the vehicle's WiFi Hub that passengers can then connect to.

Hey just a little update:
I had an appointment at my Citroen dealer and they wanted to inspect the car, left it there for 2 days and picked up with nothing done with it. I got a new appointment in 2 weeks, they need at least 3 working days for the car and received instructions from the manufacturer on what to check and they need to take out almost the whole dashboard for this…. Unfortunately they don’t give me a free rental car for those days even when this technical problem for a car not older than 6 months is not my fault….
They didn’t update the firmware, manufacturer explicitly said not to do this right now before the concrete diagnosis….
I’ll keep u updated….

This is the best thing really, as you shouldn't be having these issues with a new car. I would be demanding a courtesy car when it next goes in, as you've already been delayed once and wasted time.
