Shock mount collapsed

Unread post by bump_draft »

So after sussing out the engine and determining there wasn't anything actually wrong with it (clutch was rattling it wasn't a damn rod knock) the shock mount failed and shot the sphere up and into the hood.

Is there a reinforced, better quality mount available anywhere?

Anything I should know when replacing it?

Thanks

Oh dear... Those - known in these parts as strut tops - are no longer available new and hard to find second-hand in good condition.

There is/was however, a company in Eastern Europe who can rebuild your failed one... Used to be called something like KingAS or ElastomerEU and were/are, I believe, in somewhere like Lithuania... They were still a going concern a year or so back and hopefully still are.

I have used them in the distant past to rebuild XM strut tops, as have many others, with great satisfaction.

They could also rebuild other metal/rubber items like dual-mass crankshaft pulleys and engine mount bushes...

Sorry to see this has happened, I notice that this appears to be an XM without the Hydractive set up (small diameter hydraulic pipe connection seen) - that's quite rare I think and you might also need to ensure the replacement strut tops are the right type.

I have just fitted a pair of reconditioned Xantia top mounts from Lithuania. At £400 including a disgusting £89 UK customs and VAT fee, I still think they are worth it especially for peace of mind. They have resale value if you scrapped the car.

They are polyurethane, not rubber and I didn't expect to feel any different. They have made the ride lovely and smooth which means the old mounts must have gone tough over the years and lost their rubbery-ness. These give it that new car fresh NVH back. Based on my experience, I highly recommend them. I used UPS to post them out to Lithuania which for £23 was amazing value.

Anyone interested can contact Irmantas Galinis at Elastomer.EU. His communication is excellent and he kept me informed by email and WhatsApp. If anyone has questions, please send me a message
